Chapter 349: Turning (2)
Chapter 349: Turning (2)
Arachne’s gaze was like a hawk’s, fixed intently on Kyle’s face as her mind whizzed with questions. What game was Lyra playing? And what was happening to Kyle? The air seemed thick with tension, like the calm before a storm.
Arachne’s thoughts were a jumble of concern and suspicion as she watched Kyle’s chest rise and fall with each shallow breath. The shadows seemed to be closing in, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were running out of time. She glanced around the room, taking in the others’ worried faces, and knew she had to do something.
With a quiet determination, Arachne stood up, her eyes locking onto Lyra’s serene expression. "I need to talk to you," she said, her voice low and even. Lyra’s smile never wipped, but her eyes flickered with a hint of curiosity as she followed Arachne out of the room.
The corridor was dimly lit, the flickering torches casting eerie shadows on the walls. Arachne didn’t waste any time, her words tumbling out in a hushed rush. "What did you do back there? What’s happening to Kyle?"
Lyra’s expression remained calm, but Arachne caught a glimmer of something beneath the surface – a spark of intensity that was almost... excitement. "I saved him, Arachne. I pulled him back from the brink."
Arachne’s eyes narrowed. "At what cost?"
Lyra’s smile grew wider, her eyes glinning like polished stones. "You’ll see."
Arachne’s eyes narrowed, her grip on reality feeling like it was slipping. "What do you mean, ’you’ll see’?" she demanded, her voice low and urgent. Lyra’s smile was like a mask, infuriatingly calm and unyielding.
Lyra leaned in, her voice barely above a whisper. "I mean, Arachne, that Kyle’s connection to the Nexus is deeper than we thought. The shadows didn’t just consume him – they revealed something."
Arachne’s mind was racing. "What something?"
"The potential," Lyra breathed, her eyes shining with an unsettling intensity. "Kyle’s got a spark, Arachne. A spark that could change everything."
Arachne felt a shiver run down her spine. "Change everything how?"
Lyra straightened, her smile morphing into something almost feral. "Let’s just say... the shadows aren’t the only ones with plans for Kyle."
Arachne’s instincts screamed at her to get back to Kyle, to protect him from whatever Lyra was playing at. She turned to head back into the room, but Lyra’s voice stopped her.
"Arachne, one more thing."
Arachne turned, her eyes flashing with warning. "What?"
Lyra’s gaze was like a cold wind. "You’re in this now. You can’t go back."
The corridor seemed to darken, shadows twisting like living things. Arachne’s heart was pounding, her hand on the door handle like a lifeline.
Arachne’s grip on the door handle tightened, her mind racing with defiance. She pushed open the door, her eyes scanning the room for Kyle. He was still lying on the makeshift bed, his chest rising and falling with a little more ease now. The others were gathered around him, their faces etched with concern.
As Arachne entered, their eyes turned to her, searching for answers. She shook her head slightly, trying to convey that she didn’t have any – not yet, anyway.
Lyra slipped into the room behind her, her presence like a soft whisper. "I’ll just check on him," she said, her voice dripping with innocence.
Arachne stepped aside, her eyes never leaving Lyra’s face. What was she playing at? The others seemed oblivious, but Arachne’s instincts were screaming at her to get Lyra out of there.
Elara approached her, her voice low. "What’s going on? What’s happening with Kyle?"
Arachne’s gaze flicked to Kyle, then back to Elara. "I don’t know, but we need to keep an eye on Lyra."
Elara’s eyes narrowed. "You think she’s involved?"
Arachne’s response was barely audible. "I think she’s involved in something. Let’s just keep watch."
The room seemed to hold its breath, the tension palpable. Kyle stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He looked around, confusion etched on his face.
"Arachne?" he whispered, his voice weak.
Arachne was beside him in an instant, her hand on his shoulder. "I’m here, Kyle. You’re safe."
Kyle’s gaze locked onto hers, a flicker of fear in his eyes. "What happened?"
Arachne hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But Kyle’s eyes were already clouding, his mind piecing together fragments of memory.
"The shadows," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I saw things...felt things..."
Arachne’s grip on his shoulder tightened. "It’s okay, Kyle. We’re here. We’ll help you through it."
As she spoke, Lyra appeared beside her, a soft smile on her face. "Yes, Kyle. We’re all here for you."
Kyle’s eyes turned to Lyra, a spark of wariness igniting in their depths. Arachne saw it, and her instincts screamed at her to get Lyra away from him.
But it was too late. Lyra’s hand touched Kyle’s forehead, and his eyes went wide. A jolt of energy ran through him, his back arching off the bed.
Arachne tried to pull Lyra away, but she was frozen, held in place by some unseen force. The room erupted into chaos, the others shouting, trying to reach Kyle.
As Arachne struggled to break free, she saw Kyle’s eyes flash with a dark, primal energy. He sat up, his gaze locking onto hers.
And smiled.
Like he was someone else entirely.
The room fell silent, the only sound Kyle’s ragged breathing as he sat up, his eyes burning with an otherworldly intensity. Arachne’s heart was racing, her mind struggling to keep up with what was happening.
"Kyle?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Kyle, what’s going on?"
The thing that was Kyle smiled wider, its gaze drifting over the group. "You shouldn’t have done that," it said, its voice low and menacing. "You shouldn’t have pulled me back."
Arachne’s skin crawled as she realized that Kyle was gone, replaced by something dark and ancient. "What have you done, Lyra?" she growled, her eyes flashing with accusation.
Lyra’s smile was serene, her eyes shining with a mad intensity. "I did what needed to be done, Arachne. Kyle’s destiny is bigger than any of us."
The thing that was Kyle laughed, the sound sending shivers down Arachne’s spine. "You think you control me, Lyra? You think you can harness this power?"
Lyra’s eyes flashed with excitement. "I know I can, Kyle. And with your help, we can reshape the world."
Arachne saw her chance, and she took it. With a swift movement, she grabbed Lyra’s arm, pulling her away from Kyle. "We’re getting out of here," she said, her voice firm.
But it was too late. The shadows around them began to twist and writhe, tendrils snaking out to bind them in place. Arachne’s heart sank as she realized they were trapped.
The thing that was Kyle stood up, its eyes blazing with power. "The game has begun," it said, its voice dripping with malevolence. "And only one side can win."
As the shadows closed in, Arachne knew they were in grave danger. She glanced around the room, her eyes locking onto Elara’s. The look they shared was clear: it was fight or die.
