Chapter 536: I Want to Know Every Part of You
Chapter 536: I Want to Know Every Part of You
As the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, the beast soldiers finally managed to clear a safe path leading toward the Duke of Illvaris’ manor. Still, the situation was far from safe.
Because of that, Edmund ordered the soldiers to split the women into eight smaller groups. Each group would consist of four women and two soldiers so they could move more carefully and keep track of everyone more easily.
"We’ll walk right behind you," Primrose said gently as she tied a green ribbon around Evelia’s wrist. "So don’t worry. We’ll make sure no one gets left behind."
Primrose had intentionally chosen different colors for each group so she could count everyone faster if something happened. Honestly, the ribbons were not only useful for separating the groups, but they also looked surprisingly pretty.
"There," she said softly after finishing the knot. "Is it too tight?"
Evelia shook her head lightly. "No, it’s fine."
She didn’t say anything afterward, but spoke in her mind instead.
[It still feels strange...]
[I still can’t believe they’re doing all of this just to save us, people like us... who aren’t even important.]
[I thought something like this would never happen to me.]
Primrose felt a small ache in her chest after hearing those thoughts. After years of humiliation and pain, it was no surprise that Evelia saw herself as someone worthless.
"Thank you," Primrose suddenly said with a smile.
Evelia blinked in confusion. "For what, Your Majesty?"
Primrose gently held both of her hands before speaking softly, "For letting me help you, and for believing in me." Her smile became warmer. "From now on, I won’t let anyone hurt you again because you’re one of my precious people."
Evelia’s eyes widened slightly. "I... I don’t think I’m that precious, Your Majesty."
Primrose immediately shook her head. "What do you mean?" she said softly. "As the Queen of Beast, of course I see every beastkin as precious. That includes you and all the other women trapped there."
Her voice became even gentler as she repeated, "All of you are precious to me."
Evelia could only look at Primrose in silence because she didn’t know what to say. After years of being trapped inside a suffocating cage, her heart could finally feel the warmth she had longed for, even warmer than the sun.
It was the feeling of being cared for by someone.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Evelia whispered.
Tears slowly filled her eyes, making them shine under the dim evening light, while her trembling lips struggled to hold back her emotions.
"I’m glad to have you as my queen," she said.
This time, Primrose was the one left speechless becauae for so long, she had doubted herself. She always wondered if she was truly capable of becoming a good queen or not.
But hearing those words made her finally realize that maybe she really had been trying her best all this time, and somehow... her efforts had finally reached someone’s heart.
"There’s no need to thank me," Primrose said softly as she gently patted Evelia’s cheek. "Protecting all of you is simply my duty."
Then she smiled again and added, "Now go gather with your group, alright? And remember, don’t wander off or leave without telling the soldiers first."
Evelia forced herself to smile before quickly nodding. "I understand, Your Majesty."
After making sure everyone was wearing the ribbons tied around their wrists, the group finally began their journey toward Illvaris.
Three beast soldiers led the way at the very front, carefully watching the dark path ahead. Meanwhile, Edmund and Primrose rode on horseback at the very back of the group.
They chose not to use a carriage because if danger suddenly appeared, Edmund wouldn’t be able to move freely inside one, and more importantly, he didn’t want to leave Primrose somewhere he couldn’t immediately protect her.
"Done!" Primrose said happily after tying a pink ribbon around Edmund’s wrist. She lifted her hand and placed it beside Edmund’s hand. "Now we have matching ribbons!"
Edmund lowered his gaze toward their hands. For a moment, he simply stared silently before finally taking Primrose’s hand into his own and guiding the horse with only one hand.
"Your hand is so small."
He slowly opened his palm, allowing Primrose to rest her hand on top of it. His fingers gently traced each of hers, quietly enjoying the soft feeling of her skin.
"Cute," he murmured under his breath.
On the other hand, Primrose felt her entire body grow hot, and her cheeks immediately turned red. Even now, she still couldn’t calm her heart whenever Edmund acted sweetly toward her.
But the warm feeling in her chest quickly faded when Edmund suddenly spoke again. "Back in the room... I almost believed that mysterious voice."
His eyes shifted back and forth between the road ahead and Primrose’s hand. "I started wondering... do I really know my wife? But I know you must have heard it too."
"Edmund..." Primrose spoke softly. "I know that wasn’t the real you. That voice was only trying to mess with your mind."
Edmund fell silent for a few seconds before finally speaking again. "But sometimes... you really do feel like a mystery to me," he admitted honestly. "It feels like there’s still something about you that I don’t know, and somehow... that feeling bothers me."
[Especially after learning that you and your father once lived a completely different life in the past,] Edmund continued through their mind connection so nobody else could hear him.
[I keep wondering... did I also exist in that other life?]
[Did I treat you well?]
[Or did I make the same mistakes I made during our first life together?]
Primrose lowered her gaze slightly.
"Edmund, if we’re still not sure about this, then maybe we don’t have to—"
"I want to know," Edmund cut her off before she could finish.
He released her hand, then moved his arm around her waist instead, pulling her closer against him while riding the horse.
"I want to know every part of you," he whispered softly near her ear. "I want to understand you completely."
