Chapter 21: Paper Cutting
Chapter 21: Paper Cutting
After putting his things away in the courtyard, Jiang Zhou went out, while Yuan Xiu stayed in the courtyard to unpack the things she had bought.
Looking at her home, which was gradually taking shape thanks to her tidying up, Yuan Xiu felt a surge of joy.
The newly bought quilt definitely couldn't be used to make the bed tomorrow. Yuan Xiu couldn't bear to put it on the bed without water. After tidying up, she quickly pumped water from the well and used the large basin she had just bought to wash all the sheets and quilt covers.
After washing the sheets and duvet cover, she carefully washed the newly bought pots and pans twice.
She's as hardworking as a little bee.
As soon as Jiang Zhou entered the house, the first thing he saw was a large red peony-patterned bed sheet and duvet cover hanging in the courtyard, fluttering in the wind.
The washed pots and pans were neatly placed on the table under the eaves to drain.
Yuan Xiu sat at the entrance of the main room, a small woven basket on her lap, scissors and a piece of red paper in her hand, her head down as she deftly cut something.
When she looked up, holding the red paper against the light and unfolding it, Jiang Zhou could see clearly that it was a pair of double happiness characters.
At that moment, Jiang Zhou's heart was gently bumped by something.
"You're back?" Yuan Xiu put down the paper cutting she was doing. "Would you like some water? I've boiled some."
Jiang Zhou shook his head. "You can do paper cutting too?"
"I know a little bit. I cut out some 'double happiness' characters and paper-cut window decorations. I'll put them up later so it'll be more festive when everyone comes over tomorrow."
Yuan Xiu swallowed hard. Didn't he give her eighty-one yuan a month for household expenses?
"Actually, you don't need to give me so much. Just give me enough money each month, and you can save the rest yourself."
Jiang Zhou looked at her in surprise. Most wives would be happy if their husbands didn't even have money to buy cigarettes and handed over all their wages. But she was complaining that he was giving too much.
