Chapter 10 Her Choice
Chapter 10 Her Choice
With Liu Agou's matter resolved, Lin Chen felt a rare sense of relief.
On the way back, he took Tang Yuwei to Tang Dazui's house. The case of the dead fish had been solved; it was the neighbor, Waiyan, who poisoned it.
"Jealousy can turn a person into someone unrecognizable," Lin Chen shook his head.
To get his sentence reduced, Tang Da Zui's wife paid him a sum of money, and now Tang Da Zui finally has money to pay the water bill. Da Zui's wife and son are both home today, and they are exceptionally hospitable to Lin Chen, insisting that they stay for a bowl of sweet potato and fish soup.
"Auntie, I'm really not hungry," Tang Yuwei waved her hands repeatedly.
She could understand tomato fish, but what kind of cooking method was this sweet potato and fish?
"Have some, don't be picky." Big Mouth's wife held Tang Yuwei's hand affectionately, as if she were treating her own daughter.
Tang Yuwei cast a pleading look at Lin Chen, but Lin Chen took the bowl, tilted his head back, and gulped it down without changing his expression, as if he were drinking plain water.
Tang Yuwei stared in disbelief, thinking to herself, "This class monitor is ruthless." She forced herself to take a bite, and her expression instantly froze. This taste… it was a brutal assault on her taste buds.
"Drink it all, don't waste it. Didn't you say you wanted to get along well with the masses? This is a required course," Lin Chen said in a low voice.
There's a reason why Lin Chen is so popular in the township. Besides being handsome, he genuinely treats the villagers like human beings—never looking down on them or being perfunctory.
Tang Yuwei gritted her teeth, held her breath, and forced down the soup, her mind filled with rage as she mentally tore her class monitor to pieces.
On the return trip, Lin Chen took a longer route.
"Where to?" Tang Yuwei asked.
"Look at the flowers."
Looking at flowers? This dull class monitor is so romantic?
Tang Yuwei felt a strange sense of anticipation.
As the car drove slowly, we gradually came into view a wide river, the famous Lan River of Sui County. In front of us was a mountain with a significant drop, and the river had carved out a large riverbed.
Wild gourd flowers bloomed along the riverbank, scattered here and there. The flowers were pure white and looked dry and fake when viewed individually, but when they were planted together, they were quite spectacular. The locals named this place White Sand Beach.
Tang Yuwei was seeing this for the first time and exclaimed in surprise.
She fearlessly jumped out of the car and plunged into the sea of flowers. Lin Chen watched her run among the flowers with doting eyes; her lithe figure resembled a joyful rabbit.
He was like that once upon a time.
When I first saw this sea of flowers, I wanted to rush into it.
And I don't know when it started, but when I look at this field of flowers again, my heart no longer surges with emotion, only with nostalgia remains. Perhaps the trivialities of rural life have worn down my edges, or perhaps the hardships of reality have buried my passion.
Lin Chen stood by the roadside, casually picked a wild gourd flower, crumpled it into fluff, puffed out his cheeks, and blew on it.
The fluff drifts and floats, but it can never fly high.
"Class monitor, come down and play!"
"No, you can continue playing."
"Come on!" Tang Yuwei ran over and pulled Lin Chen into the sea of flowers.
Lin Chen wanted to start cursing.
She danced gracefully around Lin Chen, her long neck, slender waist, and shapely but not fat hips a gift from the Creator.
At that moment, Lin Chen suddenly felt that those trivialities and hardships didn't seem so unbearable anymore.
In the morning, Lin Chen was engrossed in writing his quarterly summary at the institute.
Tang Yuwei came over and asked if there was anyone who could help. Seeing her innocent and eager look, Lin Chen made up his mind and assigned her this difficult task. It was time for her to see the true face of the workplace.
In a company like Xinhai Group, which is neither purely public nor purely private, summarizing is a complex art.
You may not do your job perfectly, but you must write a great summary.
No matter how well you do the work, if you don't write a good summary, it's all for nothing; if you write a good summary, you can get away with doing a terrible job.
In the afternoon, Director Lin Kaidong called, asking Lin Chen to attend the third quarter production summary meeting at the bureau building the next day. The meeting would be personally chaired by Deputy Director Tan Huasheng, who is in charge of production.
"I'm not going, you go." When Lin Chen heard that Director Tan was in charge, he was even less willing to go. Tan Huasheng was the deputy director of the county company, in charge of production. He was the kind of leader who shouted slogans all the time and was a bit serious.
These meetings are boring; they're all just empty rhetoric and grandstanding.
A few years ago, he might have rushed to do it to impress his superiors, but after realizing his lack of prospects for promotion in recent years, he's become more accepting of it. Now, he just wants to go to work quietly and secretly write novels to earn some extra money.
Not to mention, writing novels is quite lucrative; this month, his royalties were even higher than his salary.
Money emboldens men, and Lin Chen was indeed getting a little cocky.
Lin Kaidong declined, saying, "You go ahead, I'm not free tomorrow." In fact, he knew very well that the data from the Baru Institute was not good, and he would definitely be criticized if he went, so he pushed Lin Chen out to take the blame.
"Go ahead and show your face in front of the leaders more often, so you can get promoted in the future." Lin Kaidong used the old trick, giving you a good dose of motivational talk.
"I don't want to improve," Lin Chen retorted directly.
When a person is free from desires and wants, they become fearless and invincible. Lin Chen felt that he was now his true self.
"You can say things like that to me, but don't let the higher-ups hear it, or you'll really have no hope."
"I say the same thing to everyone who comes."
"Are you the director now, or am I?"
"You're the director, and I'm the squad leader."
"Then I order you to go."
"So you're just showing off your authority? What can I say? All you can do as the director is put on a show of power towards us."
"You think I wanted to be this lousy director? If I could just give it up, I would have done it to you long ago."
"Thanks, but I can't do it. Whatever."
Lin Chen sneered inwardly, "If I really don't let you be the one, you'll probably be crying and begging for mercy."
Everyone knows you cried for days after you were taken down.
Tang Yuwei, who was sitting to the side organizing meeting materials, was dumbfounded. At the Balu Power Supply Station, the workers were all afraid of the station chief and dared not say a word in front of him. Lin Chen was the first person to dare to speak to the station chief like this.
Lin Chen wasn't afraid of the director because he knew the director needed him to do his work.
The director tolerated Lin Chen because he knew he was capable and trusted him completely. He believed Lin Chen was a genuine leader and posed no threat.
The next day, Lin Chen appeared at the county company building on time.
He always set high standards for himself, never arriving late or early, taking the money and doing the job, and leaving on time.
He saw Chen Ya at the entrance of the conference room.
She wore the company's signature white uniform, the well-tailored fabric outlining her beautiful figure. Her breasts were larger than Yuwei's, like an inverted jade bowl, and her waist was slender, like a serpent.
Other girls look like cleaners in their company uniforms, but she looks good in hers. I guess it's a matter of temperament and figure.
"Yes, sign here."
She stood at the door in charge of signing in, and Rou Cong pointed with her finger, her voice crisp and clear.
Lin Chen didn't look at her or speak, just kept his head down. As he signed the document, Chen Ya suddenly leaned closer, her voice carrying a barely audible tone: "Lin Chen, aren't you going back to the office after the meeting?"
"I probably won't go back." Lin Chen's body stiffened for a moment.
"Shall we have lunch together?"
"Is there good news?"
"Can't we have a meal together if there's no happy occasion? We haven't seen each other in so long." She complained a little.
Lin Chen looked up at her; those once clear eyes were now filled with something indescribable.
He suppressed his emotions and nodded: "Okay, same place."
After saying that, he went inside and sat down.
As Chen Ya watched his retreating figure, her heart was filled with mixed emotions. Few people at the company knew that they had actually been secretly dating for several years. Like most couples, they had experienced sweetness, confusion, arguments, and breakups.
A few years ago, she said she had "figured it out" and that she couldn't go on like this anymore, so they broke up.
Now, she sits in a spacious office in the county bureau building, while Lin Chen is still struggling at the grassroots level.
It's somewhat ironic.
