Chapter 133 Explosion
Chapter 133 Explosion
After digging for another two hours, the hyacinths and daisies made the rock-crushing rats stop.
"Are you ready to rest?"
Yanami led the carriage into the tunnel. The distance of over a hundred meters was already quite considerable. Hyacinth and Daisy followed the Rock Scraper to dig, and Yanami repaired the tunnel behind them. The tunnel now looked quite decent.
In areas prone to collapse, they would use magic to shape rock walls and create stone pillars embedded in the rock walls for support, just like in the other tunnels they dug.
We're already halfway there; we should be able to break through in about three more hours of digging.
"We dug up a hard rock. The rock-breaking rats can't dig it out anymore, so we'll have to use explosives. This is a good opportunity for them to rest."
"Then come out and have a drink of water first."
"Well, the Rock-Smashing Rats need to eat something too."
Their voices sounded muffled because they were wearing masks.
Hyacinth and Daisy turned around, their hair and faces covered in dust from the excavation, and their furry ears were covered in a layer of white ash.
They shook themselves, shaking off the dust that briefly revealed their outlines.
They took the Rockbreaker outside the tunnel, and the three of them took off their masks and took a deep breath.
"Ah...that feels so good."
"There's tea here."
Yanami had already prepared tea and handed it over, leaning against Klein's vines.
"Ah, thank you, I'm thirsty."
The two rock-crushing rats seemed exhausted. Daisy led them to the food, but instead of eating immediately, they went to the waterhole to drink.
"We'll probably only need to dig about halfway through, and it's getting late."
It was already afternoon, and the glow of the luminous crystal had dimmed considerably. We had been using the magic stone lamp for illumination, so we had become oblivious to the changing time outside.
"By the way, why didn't we find any glowing crystals? They're everywhere."
"Don't you know?"
It was Yanami who raised the question, but it was Hyacinth who asked the question with a puzzled look.
"have no idea."
Yanami shook her head.
"I see. Actually, glowing crystals are quite peculiar; they only appear on exposed rock walls."
"What do you mean?"
"That is to say, although there are no glowing crystals in the tunnel now, they will grow on their own in the newly opened exposed areas after a period of time, and they will only grow on the top and around the sides, not on the bottom."
"Huh? Why is that? That's amazing."
Most people wouldn't know this unless they've dug a hole in the rock strata, like Yanami who's always stayed in a greenhouse.
"Well, although we rats have had the most dealings with glowing crystals, we don't know why."
But what we do know is that they will grow slowly over time, just like stalactites.
So you can see that the ceilings of those large caves are covered with huge crystals. That's because they're so high up, they haven't been affected by monsters or anything like that, and they've been able to grow freely.
"That's amazing!"
"Yeah...you always encounter interesting things when you're digging a hole."
"I like it too, glowing crystal."
"Alright, let's continue. It's time to start the explosion, Daisy."
"Uh-huh!"
When the topic of explosion came up, Hyacinth and Daisy exchanged a smile, their eyes filled with a hint of excitement.
"Do you guys really like explosions?"
"Yes, no rat doesn't like explosions!"
"Explosions are art."
Seeing the flames that seemed to burn in their eyes, Yanami was somewhat puzzled.
"Yanami, your fire arrow magic is amazing! The precision is enough to achieve pinpoint explosions. It's fantastic."
"I... I also want to learn this magic... but I'm an earth elementalist."
Since most of the rat-like beings have an affinity for earth element, they can only rely on the explosives they make themselves to detonate things.
"I see... I think I can understand how you feel a little better now."
Anna probably gets along very well with them.
After finishing their tea, the two went to the pile of luggage. Since they needed to transport the broken rocks by horse-drawn carriage, they had to put them on the ground first.
The explosives found in the luggage were neatly wrapped in oil paper, each package carefully tied with hemp rope, and the edges were marked with small mouse imprints drawn with charcoal.
Isn't it a little too cute for an explosive device?
Daisy weighed it in her hand, her eyes sparkling.
"This time, we're using formula number three. The power is just enough to blast this granite, no, it won't collapse the rock wall next to it."
Daisy carried the explosives into the tunnel, while Hyacinth followed with some other tools. Yanami was also curious about what they were going to do, so she followed behind.
At the end of the tunnel, blocking the way was a solid granite rock. Daisy had already used magic to detect its size, so she was in charge of deciding the amount of gunpowder to use.
The two worked together, with Daisy in charge of preparing the explosives and Hyacinth taking out a small drill and starting to drill holes in the granite.
"It's so hard, no wonder it's granite."
After the small holes were dug, the hyacinths stuffed the assembled explosives into the deepest slot and arranged them neatly.
Daisy used clay to seal the muzzle little by little, leaving only a fuse. Her fingertips glowed with a faint yellowish-brown light, making the clay and rock stick together firmly.
Yanami stood behind them, observing their busy figures squatting in front of the hard rock. Their long tails swayed, and they seemed to be having a good time.
It seems they really love explosions, even though they're girls.
They started digging down near the ground, excavating granite a meter below, and then drilled holes and filled them with the prepared explosives.
"We plan to blast a hole that is three meters high and three meters wide, so that we won't have to blast it again when digging the next layer."
"Oh, I see."
Seemingly anticipating what Yanami would ask, Hyacinth explained while keeping her head down and continuing with her work.
"Phew, all done."
After placing all the explosives, Hyacinth wiped the sweat from her brow, while Daisy continued, tying together the exposed fuses and then connecting them to a different fuse.
The lead wire wasn't very long, only one meter.
"Is this long enough?"
"Hmm, this kind of lead wire is very slow."
After doing all that, Daisy clapped her hands, shaking off a layer of dust.
"Okay, okay."
"Let me check it again."
Daisy made way, and hyacinth squatted down to check each lead one by one.
"Hmm, we can blow it up now, um..."
She thought for a moment, then turned to look at Yanami.
"Yana, would you like to give it a try?"
"Huh? Me?"
"We've lit it ourselves many times, you probably haven't tried it yet, have you?"
"Yes... then let me try. Can I just light it?"
"Yes, but before that..."
As Hyacinth spoke, she knelt down to check Yanami's shoelaces, then checked her own, and Daisy followed suit.
"Although the lead-in process takes a long time, the tunnel is not very big. If someone accidentally falls, they will panic and it is easy for an accident to happen. So it is important to check carefully."
"Oh, I see... So we'll have to run in a bit, right?"
Seeing their serious expressions, Yanami also became nervous, but Hyacinth shook her head.
"No, running is too dangerous. The fuse is too slow. Just walk out."
"Hmm... I understand."
