Chapter 28 Getting Involved
Chapter 28 Getting Involved
The widow, Zhou, couldn't help but look the young man up and down, her gaze filled with scrutinizing interest, and asked, "How did you find him?"
"It's not difficult," Chen Ye said with a hint of composure. "As long as you take me out, I will tell you everything."
The widow, Zhou, did not respond immediately.
She looked at the young man standing straight in front of her, who had been locked in the Feng family dungeon. Instead of begging for mercy, he started negotiating with her.
"You don't actually want to find the killer, you just want to live, right?"
"Even ants beg for survival, let alone humans," Chen Ye said frankly. "Of course I want to beg for survival, and so does my wife. If this matter can be accomplished, your position in the household will be even more secure."
"What if we fail?"
"It's nothing more than my death." Chen Ye showed no fear, his voice as calm as if he were talking about something unrelated to himself: "As for Madam, even if you made a mistake in your haste to find your husband's killer, the people in the manor will just think it's human nature."
Upon hearing this, the widow, Zhou, re-examined the young man before her, her gaze carrying a hint of weighing.
A moment later, a smile involuntarily appeared on her lips.
"You are very smart."
Without further hesitation, she summoned a guard nearby and said decisively, "Release him. I want to take him to see the head of the family."
The guard was taken aback, his face showing difficulty: "Young Madam, this...this is against the rules. This person's origins are unknown, and he is a serious criminal. If he manages to escape with the real killer, I will also be held responsible."
"This person has important evidence," Zhou interrupted him, her eyes sharp. "I don't trust anyone in the manor; I'll keep a close watch on him myself."
The guard hesitated, "Madam, this..."
Before he could finish speaking, the widow, Zhou, slapped him across the face.
Snapped!
The guard, a martial arts master, was slapped to the ground and couldn't get up for a moment.
He instinctively covered his face, his eyes filled with fear. He opened his mouth, but couldn't even utter a plea for mercy. He just knelt on the ground, not daring to raise his head.
"A mere servant, who gave you the audacity to question your master's decisions?" The widow, Madam Zhou, raised her eyebrows, her face contorted with rage, and her eyes even flashed with murderous intent.
"How did you all perform your duties when the Third Young Master was alive? Now that his body is barely cold and the murderer hasn't been found, you're already afraid to take responsibility? If the murderer gets away, can you bear the consequences?"
The guard immediately knelt on the ground, his voice trembling as he said, "This humble servant dares not...this humble servant dares not..."
"I'm taking him away now," said Zhou, the widow, without looking at him again, her words swift and decisive.
"Yes."
This time, no one dared to disobey in the slightest.
The cell door opened, and Chen Ye walked out of the cell.
Zhou didn't say another word, turned around and walked away.
Chen Ye turned and looked at Zuo Dongxi.
Zuo Dongxi leaned against the wall listlessly, a bitter smile on his face. He realized that all his efforts had been for someone else's benefit.
Chen Ye didn't say much, just nodded slightly, and followed Zhou Shi.
Su Guang, who was in another cell, witnessed this scene and a glint of light flickered in his eyes as he seemed to be deep in thought.
Chen Ye followed behind the widow Zhou as they walked out of the dungeon.
After being in the dark for a long time, the sudden appearance of light stung his eyes, and he instinctively raised his hand to shield them from the light.
After a while, his eyes gradually adjusted.
Only then did he truly see what the widow, Zhou, looked like.
She looked to be no more than twenty years old, with a delicate nose and red lips, and almond-shaped eyes hidden beneath her willow-leaf eyebrows. Her skin was so smooth and delicate that it seemed as if she could be broken with a touch. She was clearly a beauty from a noble family, yet she possessed an aura of cold frost.
There were two old women and two guards outside the dungeon. When they saw them come out, they immediately bowed and paid their respects.
The widow, Zhou, said nothing and walked out.
The group entered the main hall of the backyard where Zhou lived.
Chen Ye glanced at it briefly and felt that the style inside was completely different from that in the capital.
In the center of the main hall hung a landscape painting, with a long table placed beneath it.
A vase was placed on the east side of the long table, and a bronze mirror was placed on the west side.
Half of an eight-immortal table was pressed inside the long table, while the other half was exposed.
A grand chair is placed on each side of the table.
It's clearly a Southern style.
Zhou took his seat in the main position and waved away his attendants.
After the door closed, she picked up a cup of tea, took a sip, and didn't say anything, but her gaze remained fixed on Chen Ye.
Chen Ye wasn't in a hurry; he stood with his hands clasped and waited patiently.
After a long pause, Zhou put down her teacup and said, "Tell me, what are you going to do next?"
Chen Ye looked down at the patterns on the bluestone bricks on the ground, carefully choosing his words. After a moment, he looked up and said, "Next, Madam only needs to do one thing: truthfully tell others what she heard and saw today."
Zhou frowned slightly, clearly somewhat disbelieving.
"It looks simple, but many details need to be arranged one by one," Chen Ye continued.
"This news must be leaked unintentionally by the servants in the lady's residence, or leaked after being bribed."
Why was it arranged this way?
"Because only in this way will the other party be willing to believe it."
A hint of realization gradually appeared in Zhou's eyes, and she nodded, saying, "Continue."
Chen Ye said, "Once the groundwork has been laid, in the evening, Madam should release another message saying that I have a teacup and other important evidence. You should call over the pharmacist in the manor and make it seem like you want to consult him."
"The rest, lock me up and put me under guard. Madam, you just need to wait."
Zhou toyed with the teacup in her hand, seemingly lost in thought, then a knowing smile appeared on her lips: "You're putting yourself into this trap, using yourself as bait."
Chen Ye flattered her at the opportune moment, saying, "You are so wise, Madam, that you could see through my little trick at a glance."
Zhou ignored his flattery.
She placed the teacup on the table, the bottom of the cup making a soft tapping sound against the surface.
"If we really want to do this, we have to do it quickly and not let the head of the family get involved."
She paused, then looked up at Chen Ye and said, "But why should they come just because you mention a teacup?"
"The Third Young Master was poisoned. There are only a few ways to use poison, and a teacup is easy to associate with it. We can just trick him."
After listening, Zhou stared at him for a moment, then stood up and called out, "Have Uncle Guan come here."
Soon, a middle-aged man dressed in black training clothes rushed in, pushed open the door, glanced at Chen Ye first, and then bowed to Madam Zhou, saying, "Madam, you wanted to see me?"
Zhou raised her chin and said decisively, "Please have Uncle Guan lock him in a guest room and find a few people to guard him. Remember, find people of average skill, not too conspicuous."
"This old servant understands."
Chen Ye's lips curled up slightly.
Now he was about 70-80% sure he could escape.
