Chapter 13 Wartime Missions
Chapter 13 Wartime Missions
Rain Country Frontline Command.
When the three members of the fifth squad lifted the heavy waterproof curtain and entered the tent, a strong smell of tobacco mixed with the lingering stench of blood hit them.
Compared to when they first arrived half a month ago, the atmosphere here is much more oppressive, with a huge sand table surrounded by hurried messenger ninjas.
"They're here."
Jiraiya stood at the very front of the sand table, without turning around, his voice sounding hoarse and tired more than ever before.
"Lord Jiraiya."
Uchiha Fugaku stepped forward and bowed deeply.
After half a month of special training, the young Uchiha clan leader had toned down his sharp edge considerably, replaced by a more composed and imposing presence.
Jiraiya turned around, his bloodshot eyes sweeping over the three of them. He lingered on those three equally sharp eyes for a moment before revealing a satisfied expression.
"It seems the special training paid off; you guys have changed."
Without much small talk, he picked up a baton and struck it heavily on a winding red line on the sand table.
"To make a long story short, the situation has deteriorated."
Jiraiya's tone instantly turned cold and serious: "Just yesterday, Sunagakure broke the temporary ceasefire agreement, and their puppet troops have crossed the border, attempting to rendezvous with Hanzo of the Salamander in Amegakure."
"The Sand Village and the Rain Village have joined forces?" Minato Namikaze frowned slightly, realizing the seriousness of the problem.
"It's not just about joining forces."
Jiraiya's baton traced the red line towards a canyon deep in the Land of Rain: "The intelligence team has intercepted information that Hanzo has opened up transport rights to Howling Canyon in exchange for Sunagakure's support. Tonight, a shipment of supplies sufficient to support Hanzo's full-scale counterattack—including thousands of explosive tags, a large quantity of puppet poison, and special chakra metal—will be transported to the front lines via this route."
"Once this batch of supplies arrives, our defenses on the eastern front of the Land of Rain will be in serious trouble."
The air inside the tent seemed to freeze.
Nishikawa Tetsu stared at the red line, his brain racing.
Howling Canyon is 15 kilometers long, with a narrow terrain, towering cliffs on both sides, and rapid water flow.
This is a strategically important location that is easy to defend but difficult to attack, making it an excellent ambush point.
There is only one mission.
Jiraiya abruptly raised his head: "Sever this supply line at all costs. Whether we blow it up, sink it in the river, or seize it, we must not allow any supplies to reach the front lines!"
"Yes!" the three answered in unison.
"However, this mission is different from the past."
Jiraiya looked at Fugaku Uchiha, his expression becoming unusually solemn: "The enemy's escort force is very large, and it's highly likely that there are Sunagakure puppeteers mixed in among them. With just the three of you in Team 5, no matter how talented you are, you will surely die if you fall into a trap."
He clapped his hands.
"Come in!"
As soon as the words were spoken, six ninjas dressed in Konoha uniforms walked into the tent.
Five fully armed elite Chunin, and the one walking at the back caught Nishikawa Tetsu's attention.
He was a young man of about twenty years old, with his headband tied low, covering his forehead, and his eyes were pure white without any impurities.
Hyuga clan.
"They are the support team I just transferred from the rear. We are short-handed right now, so that's all the people I can bring."
Jiraiya pointed at the Hyuga ninja and said seriously, "This is Hyuga Hiroshi, a Jonin from the Hyuga branch family. To ensure the success of this interception mission, I have specially approved his joining your team."
Fugaku Uchiha's pupils contracted slightly.
In Konoha, although the Uchiha and Hyuga are both prestigious families specializing in ocular jutsu, their relationship has always been delicate; simply put, they don't get along.
More importantly, the Byakugan's reconnaissance capabilities are a strategic resource on the battlefield, and Jiraiya actually gave it to a raiding squad this time.
"It seems this mission has a higher priority than I thought," Nishikawa Tetsu thought to himself, while simultaneously calculating rapidly.
"With the 360-degree vision of the White Eye, my trap setting and enemy situation prediction will be greatly improved."
Jiraiya tossed an armband representing the temporary captain to Fugaku Uchiha.
"Uchiha Fugaku, from this moment on, you are no longer just the captain of Team 5."
Jiraiya's voice echoed inside the tent:
"I appoint you as the commander of this operation. These five ninjas, including Hyuga Hiroshi, as well as Namikaze Minato and Nishikawa Tetsu, will all be under your command."
Fugaku Uchiha's hand, which had caught the armband, stiffened slightly.
Entrusting the proud Uchiha clan with commanding another powerful family of ocular jutsu, the Hyuga, is not only a sign of trust, but also a heavy test.
"Fugaku, this is war, not a family feud."
Jiraiya stared into his eyes, seemingly seeing through the slightest bit of resentment in his heart. "Every decision a commander makes carries the lives of his subordinates. Can you handle that?"
Fugaku Uchiha took a deep breath, gripped the armband tightly in his hand, and then solemnly put it on his left arm.
He turned around to face the other seven ninjas inside the tent.
Although the Hyuga branch family ninja had no expression, his brows furrowed almost imperceptibly when he saw that the commander was an Uchiha. However, he quickly regained his professional ninja demeanor and bowed slightly in greeting.
"I am Uchiha Fugaku."
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable air of authority:
"For this mission, I only ask two things: complete the mission, and survive."
After speaking, he glanced at everyone and began assigning tasks.
"Hinata Hiro."
"Here." The Hyuga ninja stepped forward.
Fugaku Uchiha looked at those Byakugan eyes and said in a deep voice, "You are in charge of the entire team's reconnaissance and vigilance."
"Yes," Hinata Hiroshi replied.
Minato Namikaze.
"exist!"
"You're in charge of guerrilla warfare and mopping up, stopping any enemies who try to break through the squad's lines."
Then, Fugaku Uchiha looked at Toru Nishikawa in the corner.
The newly arrived Chunin glanced at the unremarkable Genin with some surprise, seemingly not understanding why the commander would focus his attention on a child.
"Nishikawa Toru".
Fugaku Uchiha paused for a moment, his tone carrying a hint of trust that only close acquaintances could understand, "You'll be in charge of tactical planning and trap setting; you're the brain of the team. All the ninja tools and explosive tags for these two squads will be under your command."
"Furthermore, in conjunction with Hyuga Hiroshi's intelligence, turn that canyon into a coffin that you can't get out of once you go in."
Nishikawa Tetsuya's lips curled into a smile: "Understood."
Fugaku Uchiha suddenly waved his hand, and his black combat vest fluttered in the wind.
"Everyone get ready, we'll depart at full speed in ten minutes."
Destination: Howling Canyon!
Before leaving, Nishikawa Tetsu tossed a bottle to Uchiha Fugaku.
"Special kerosene that burns only outwards."
"The Uchiha never use such external objects." Although Fugaku said this, he still accepted it.
