Chapter 67 A Show of Force
Chapter 67 A Show of Force
The following evening, two carriages drove into the Montague estate.
Two carriages drove up a long uphill road and came to a swaying stop in front of the manor’s imposing main building.
The first to get off were the four people in the second carriage. After getting off, the four immediately spread out warily, as if they were worried that someone would suddenly attack the carriage.
However, such worries were completely unnecessary; only Bill Montague and his old butler stood in front of the manor house.
Once it was confirmed that there was no danger in the surroundings, the first carriage slowly opened its doors, and a beautiful woman stepped out first, standing in front of the carriage door.
"Mr. Montague!"
A mature and steady voice came from inside the carriage.
Immediately afterwards, the owner of the voice stepped down from the carriage. He was a middle-aged man who looked very composed.
The middle-aged man walked to the main building entrance and continued speaking to Bill Montague: "I'm sorry, given the current serious situation, I have to be careful."
“I understand your caution perfectly, Mr. Stone,” Bill Montague said. “The situation is serious, and it’s never wrong to be extra careful.” He didn’t take the Bureau of Abnormal Investigations’ rudeness to heart.
"Thank you for your understanding, Mr. Montagu," Stone said. "Could my men check the surroundings? The FBI hopes that Montagu and Lonkinswit can reach a settlement tonight."
Mr. Stone, representing the Bureau of Investigation, wanted to check the surroundings to confirm that the manor owner had not secretly planted any men.
Most importantly, Mr. Stone was somewhat uneasy about not seeing Anastasia.
Difficult to control—that's how the Bureau of Anomalies described Anastasia.
"Of course," Bill readily agreed to Mr. Stone's request. "Mr. Lonkinswit would probably not dare to show his face without a thorough inspection."
Mike Montague was always worried that Lonkinswain would launch a sneak attack, and Lonkinswain was equally worried that Bill Montague would ambush him.
Just a few days ago, the two sides were engaged in a passionate street fight, but now they are sitting at the same table. It's impossible for them to be completely unprepared.
"Thank you so much, Mr. Montague," Mr. Stone said with a smile.
At this moment, the beautiful woman waved her hand, and the three people who got off the second carriage immediately set to work, beginning to inspect the manor courtyards, which were measured in acres.
The remaining person entered the honey-colored main building and, guided and accompanied by a male servant, inspected the interior of the main building floor by floor.
"By the way, this is Captain Iris Warren." Mr. Stone introduced the woman beside Bill. "Don't let Miss Warren's young age fool you, she's a high-risk Transcendent."
The pretty Iris Warren nodded to Bill Montague; she seemed a little unapproachable.
"Miss Warren is young and capable, which is great news for the Bureau of Investigation," Bill said. "I really hope the Bureau can have more young captains like Miss Warren."
These words left Mr. Stone feeling quite uncomfortable.
Does the phrase "more captains like Warren" refer to Anastasia Angel?
Iris Warren is indeed very young, only twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old this year, but Anastasia looks even younger and is even more dangerous than Warren.
"Mr. Montague, where is Mike?" Mr. Stone asked. "And where is Mr. Blatt?"
It's not a big deal if you don't see the young Mike Montague, but it's a problem if you don't see Iniz Blatt, who is a superhuman capable of causing man-made disasters.
“Mike went to church to visit a friend,” Bill said. “Iniz has left Gloria; I sent him to retrieve something very important.”
When you go to church to visit a friend, is this friend referring to Father Lawrence?
And Iniz Blatt, how could he leave Gloria at such a crucial moment? Has Bill Montagu gone mad?
Suspicious, Mr. Stone stepped forward, walked up to Bill, and whispered, "Mr. Montagu, tonight's negotiations are of great importance, but your safety is even more important."
This was both Mr. Stone's personal opinion and the opinion of the Bureau of Extraordinary Investigations.
The outcome of tonight's negotiations is not important; what is important is that tonight's negotiations do not go wrong, and that neither Montagu nor Lonkinswait can be allowed to fail.
"I appreciate Mr. Stone's concern, but I believe that Mr. Lonkinswit, who initiated the meeting, shares the same sincerity as me," Bill Montagu said dismissively.
Mr. Stone showed no outward expression, but inwardly he grew increasingly puzzled. How could a successful entrepreneur be so naive?
"Let's go inside first; the inspection of the manor will likely take a long time," Bill said, stepping aside to make way for Mr. Stone.
Mr. Stone temporarily suppressed his doubts and followed Bill into the honey-colored main building.
In the spacious and bright foyer, Mr. Stone looked around, but he still couldn't find Anastasia. His doubts deepened.
"Mr. Montague, I don't see Miss Angel?" Mr. Stone asked. "Did she go to church with Mike to visit her friends?"
Upon hearing Anastasia's name, Iris Warren, who had been indifferent, suddenly looked up.
"Who is looking for me?"
Before Bill could answer, Anastasia's voice came into the hallway.
Then, footsteps sounded on the stairs, and Anastasia walked down the stairs one step at a time, appearing before the group.
Iris Warren lunged forward, her previously empty hands suddenly gripping two icicles shaped like sharp swords, and stared menacingly at Anastasia on the stairs.
Anastasia didn't come downstairs alone; she dragged a man along like a dead dog. That man was the investigator from the Bureau of Anomalies who had entered the main building earlier to check, and he was one of Warren's team members.
"Let him go!" Iris Warren said in a deep voice.
"Who are you?" Anastasia glanced at Warren. "And who are you?" she asked Stone.
Iris Warren did not answer. She lowered her body, holding ice spikes in front of her, looking like an arrow ready to be released at any moment.
"An elemental transcendent, and an ice-type at that. Are you here to deal with Iniz?" Anastasia asked.
There are certain relationships of mutual restraint among elemental beings, which is why she asked this question. She was deliberately trying to embarrass the Investigation Bureau.
"Forget it, you're too weak. You should just find someone to marry sooner rather than later," Anastasia continued.
Iris Warren's face turned extremely ugly. She knew she was no match for Anastasia, but the other's contempt and insults still enraged her.
"And you?" Anastasia pointed at Mr. Stone in the foyer. "Are you here to deal with me?"
Mr. Stone didn't rush to explain, but he was inwardly protesting his innocence. He really didn't intend to use Iris Warren's ice magic to counter Iniz Blatt's water magic.
Furthermore, who would use a high-risk level transcendent to restrain a man-made disaster level transcendent? That's practically suicide!
Uh... wait a minute, the Bureau of Anomalies Investigation seems to have actually done that before.
With Mr. Stone's silence and Anastasia's hostility, the previously harmonious atmosphere turned tense.
"Anatasia, this is Mr. Stone," Bill stepped in to smooth things over. "Mr. Stone is a representative of the Bureau of Anomalies and will be your superior from now on."
"That's very rude, Mr. Stone," Anastasia said with a smile. "However, please keep your people in check, Mr. Stone. I don't want to have any more conflicts with my colleagues."
With that, Anastasia threw the investigator, who looked like a dead dog, down the stairs.
Iris Warren put away the ice picks and quickly checked on her teammates. Fortunately, they were not seriously injured; they were just temporarily unconscious.
"You know I'm not exactly known for my strength," Anastasia said as she slowly walked down the stairs. "Mr. Stone, what do you think?"
Iris Warren looked at Anastasia upon hearing this.
She secretly vowed in her heart: one day I'll make you pay and wash away today's shame.
"I don't like the way you look at me." Anastasia looked at Warren with disdain. "Remember, there won't be a next time."
Having said that, Anastasia ignored Warren, who was eager to avenge himself, and walked straight up to Stone, her dark eyes filled with contempt.
Normally, Anastasia wouldn't express her emotions so openly, but tonight was different; she didn't have to restrain her temper and could indulge herself this once in a while.
"Miss Angel, the previous conflict was Rollins' personal behavior and had nothing to do with the Bureau of Investigation," Mr. Stone said. He appeared calm and composed, with no resentment in his eyes.
Mr. Stone, being a member of the leadership of the Bureau of Abnormal Investigations, certainly has the ability to swallow his pride and bear the insults.
"Miss Angel, please believe in the Bureau's sincerity. We warmly welcome you to join us," Mr. Stone continued, his eyes filled with genuine emotion.
Although Anastasia gave Stone a hard time as soon as she appeared, Stone remained calm and did not demand an explanation from Anastasia.
Only a brainless idiot would dare to challenge the majesty of a tiger at a time like this.
"I believe Anastasia is perfectly capable of handling the work at the Bureau of Investigation," Bill Montagu stepped in again to smooth things over. "It's just that capable people are bound to have some tempers, and I'm sure Mr. Stone will understand."
“Of course, I understand perfectly,” Mr. Stone said. “Miss Angel is so young, yet she has already reached heights that are difficult for others to achieve. It’s perfectly normal for her to be proud.”
You can't hit a smiling face, and Mr. Stone seemed to be channeling Tobias Gibson, appearing very amiable.
Anastasia smiled dismissively, ignoring Stone and Iris Warren from the Bureau of Anomalies. Anastasia had achieved her goal.
Everything in excess is bad. Anastasia can give Stone and Warren a proper talking-to, but she can't really kill them off. The main event tonight is Lonkinswait; the FBI is just a supporting character.
"Alright, let's go inside and sit down," Bill spoke up again at the opportune moment. "Inspecting the estate will take a long time, so let's sit and wait."
With that, Bill led Mr. Stone toward the drawing room.
"Angel!"
Iris Warren called out to Anastasia.
"Miss Angel," Warren said, showing some tact, "please at least give me a reason."
Although Iris Warren knew she was no match for Anastasia, she still wanted a reason to ask why Anastasia had attacked her teammate.
However, Anastasia completely ignored Warren and left the foyer, heading towards the outside of the main building.
This time, Iris Warren was completely devastated. She could tolerate the previous contempt and insults, but the current disregard was the most fatal.
