Chapter 401: Too Monstrous
Chapter 401: Too Monstrous
Vera Xavier had initially thought that as someone who had been reborn once, her experience and worldly wisdom were more than enough to beat Nathaniel Nathan.
But she soon discovered she was wrong!
Nathaniel Nathan’s mind was terrifyingly meticulous. After just two rounds, she realized he seemed to have anticipated her every move. He would either use small cards to bait out her big ones, use his own high cards to challenge her bombs, or force her to break up her pairs and sets. Whether it was his grasp of psychology or his control over the game, he seemed to have everything in the palm of his hand.
Vera felt strongly that a man like him, with his high IQ and low EQ, was a prime candidate to be kneeling on a washboard after they got married! He really wasn’t showing her any mercy!
And so, she lost two rounds in a row.
By the third round, Vera had had enough. "Playing like this is no fun," she declared. "Let’s change the rules. We’ll randomly remove ten cards from the deck, and then play with what’s left."
Theoretically, once those cards were removed, it would be impossible to count cards.
Nathaniel Nathan nodded in agreement. So, from then on, after shuffling, they would randomly remove ten cards and play with the rest of the deck.
This increased the difficulty, but it also became a greater test of a player’s skill—or perhaps, their luck.
Playing this way, Vera could finally manage to win two or three rounds out of ten.
By the end, she was thoroughly frustrated. ’What kind of freak did I end up marrying?’
Before they knew it, they had played until dawn. Vera’s eyes were red from the strain of losing. When Nathaniel slammed his winning hand onto the table, she realized she had lost yet again and slapped a hand to her forehead.
Nathaniel looked at her and said, "Alright, that’s enough for today."
Vera snorted. ’Losing to him like this,’ she thought, ’is the most humiliating thing that’s happened to me since I was reborn. I wanted to see his face covered in paper strips, but instead, I’m the one plastered with them. I’ve been utterly crushed!’
However, she was about to learn the true meaning of the phrase "it can always get worse." Still feeling wronged, she asked, "Why is it that you’re always the one who wins, even when our hands are pretty similar?"
Nathaniel said calmly, "Because you were the one who insisted on shuffling the deck to ’change your luck.’ Every time you shuffled, I’d take a quick glance. And in one of those glances, I ’accidentally’ memorized the order of the entire deck. So, in the end, it didn’t matter which ten cards you removed. I knew which ones were gone, which meant I knew exactly what you were holding."
Vera was dumbfounded. ’Oh my god,’ she thought, ’his eyes are terrifying!’
’If I’d known, I would have used my X-ray vision!’
She pouted slightly. "But even so, I still managed to win two or three rounds out of ten against you. I think I’m pretty amazing!"
Nathaniel reached out and patted her head. "I just didn’t want to end up kneeling on the washboard or sleeping on the floor. So, I let you win a couple of rounds every now and then to keep you happy."
Vera: "..."
’I really didn’t want to know such a cruel truth! Is he even human? He’s a complete monster!’
’And another thing... we were just playing cards. Did he have to be so serious about it?’
As if reading her mind, Nathaniel said coolly, "This was just a little punishment for not wanting to sleep with me last night."
Vera: "..."
Only then did Vera realize he had known her intentions from the very beginning. The only reason he’d played along, staying up all night to play cards with her, was to teach her a lesson. The truth was simply devastating!
