Chapter 101 Dissolution of Engagement
Chapter 101 Dissolution of Engagement
Lin Chuyue folded Li Zhanchuan's coat and placed it on the table. The moonlight streaming into the room from the window made her feel somewhat complicated. Since deciding to dissolve the engagement, the freedom she felt was far more complex than she had imagined.
Gu Yanchuan and her relationship gradually returned to a friendship, but the appearance of Li Zhanchuan was like a breath of fresh air, bringing some unexpected changes to her life.
Meanwhile, in Gu Yanchuan's office
It was late at night, and Gu Yanchuan was still working overtime. He spread out the documents beside him, and Luo Yurou knocked on the door and came in with a cup of coffee.
"President Gu, you're working so late, you should take care of yourself." Luo Yurou placed the coffee on the table with a sweet smile.
Gu Yanchuan looked up at her and nodded in thanks: "Yu Rou, you haven't gone home yet, it's so late?"
Luo Yurou sat down to the side, her eyes showing a hint of seriousness: "I want to learn more, after all, Uncle Gu and Aunt Gu have high expectations for me. I also hope to become your capable assistant in the future."
“Learning is a good thing, but don’t overwork yourself.” Gu Yanchuan’s tone was calm, yet caring. He handed a document to Luo Yurou, “If you really want to learn, you can start by learning about this project.”
Luo Yurou took the document, holding it with both hands, a hint of joy in her eyes: "Thank you, President Gu. I will definitely not let you down."
Gu Yanchuan didn't say anything more, focusing only on his work. Luo Yurou glanced at him discreetly, a complex emotion flickering in her eyes.
The next morning, Lin Chuyue opened her phone and saw a message from Gu Yanchuan: "Do you have time tomorrow afternoon? I'd like to go with you to meet your parents and explain the annulment of the engagement."
Lin Chuyue felt a sense of relief upon seeing the message. The arranged marriages of the past had been a shackle for her; their complete removal meant she could finally live according to her own wishes.
The Gu family's villa was decorated in a low-key yet luxurious style, with classic furniture exuding a sense of calm and composure. Lin Chuyue and Gu Yanchuan walked into the living room side by side, where Gu's parents were already sitting on the sofa waiting. Exquisite porcelain tea sets were laid out on the coffee table, and a faint aroma of tea filled the air.
Mother Gu spoke first: "Chuyue, Yanchuan, you two look serious at today's gathering. Is there something you want to tell us?"
Lin Chuyue felt slightly nervous, but she maintained a calm smile and got straight to the point: "Uncle and Aunt, Yan Chuan and I have come today to discuss the matter of the engagement with you two."
Upon hearing the words "engagement," Gu's father frowned slightly, put down his teacup, and looked at Gu Yanchuan: "Yanchuan, what's going on? An engagement is an important bond between our two families. Why are you bringing it up all of a sudden? Has something happened?"
Gu Yanchuan spoke calmly, his voice low and steady: "Dad, Mom, we understand the original intention of this engagement, but Chuyue and I have only ever had friendship and have not developed any deeper feelings for each other. Forcing us into marriage would not be a happy choice for either of us."
Gu's mother was clearly displeased: "But you've been engaged for so long, why didn't you bring it up earlier? Chuyue is a good girl, and I think you two get along quite well."
Lin Chuyue smiled gently, her voice soft yet firm: "Auntie, Yanchuan is right. We do get along well, but it's more of a tacit understanding between friends. We both feel that if this engagement continues, it will have a significant impact on both of us and our families."
After listening, Gu's father remained silent for a while, then said with a hint of dissatisfaction, "The marriage agreement is between the elders. You young people think you can overturn it with just a few words? Have you considered the feelings of the family?"
Lin Chuyue was not surprised by Gu's father's attitude. She nodded slightly and said, "Uncle, I understand your concerns, but the cooperation between the Lin family and the Gu family has never needed marriage to maintain it. The two families have a deep relationship, and even without this marriage, they can still support each other."
Gu's mother sighed, seemingly half convinced by Lin Chuyue's rationality and maturity, but still somewhat hesitant: "Chuyue, Yanchuan, have you really thought this through? This is no small matter. If you cancel the engagement, will you regret it later?"
Gu Yanchuan shook his head, his expression calm: "Mom, Chuyue and I have thought it through completely. We are willing to pursue our own happiness."
Mrs. Gu looked at Mr. Gu, then at the resolute expressions on Lin Chuyue's and Gu Yanchuan's faces, and finally sighed, "Alright, since you two have made this decision, we, as elders, shouldn't force you any further. I will communicate with the Lin family about the annulment of the engagement."
Hearing this, Lin Chuyue breathed a sigh of relief and smiled faintly: "Thank you for your understanding, Uncle and Aunt. Even after the engagement is dissolved, Yanchuan and I will still be friends, and the relationship between our two families will not be affected."
Mr. Gu nodded with a stern face: "Chuyue, I am pleased that you say so. It is acceptable to dissolve the engagement, but I hope that this matter can be handled in a dignified manner, so as not to affect the reputations of either of our companies."
Gu Yanchuan nodded slightly: "I will handle it personally and ensure that it will not affect the reputation of either of our families."
Mother Gu stood up and took Lin Chuyue's hand, her tone much gentler: "Chuyue, although you will no longer be our daughter-in-law, I will still treat you as my own daughter. Come visit us often when you have time."
Lin Chuyue nodded: "Thank you for your concern, Auntie. I have always regarded you as family."
Gu's mother patted her hand, a complicated smile on her face.
Standing outside the Gu family villa, Lin Chuyue looked at the garden in the night and couldn't help but feel a surge of emotions.
"It's finally over," she said softly, turning to look at Gu Yanchuan. "This may be the best option for us."
Gu Yanchuan smiled faintly and said calmly, "Indeed, I want to pursue my own feelings, and you also have the right to choose your future."
The two exchanged a glance, their smiles now showing a sense of ease and relief.
"Friend?" Lin Chuyue extended her hand.
"Of course we're friends." Gu Yanchuan grasped her hand and replied solemnly.
Both of them knew that from this moment on, they had finally broken free from the shackles of their arranged marriage and were embarking on new journeys in life.
That evening, Gu Yanchuan returned to the company.
After finishing his work, he stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, a glass of red wine in his hand, recalling Luo Yurou's performance that day. Her hard work and understanding gradually stirred up different feelings in him.
Meanwhile, Lin Chuyue was home alone. She opened a drawer on her desk, where several old photos were kept. She picked one up; it was a childhood photo of her and Gu Yanchuan in the garden. Back then, they were carefree and had no idea they would be drawn into their family's power struggle.
She sighed inwardly, put the photo back in the drawer, turned to look out the window, and the moonlight shone down, illuminating her determined gaze.
"From now on, I will live according to my own wishes," she whispered.
