Chapter 9, is this for freshmen?
Chapter 9, is this for freshmen?
Just as he was about to say something more, the slightly ajar door to room 302 was pushed open.
Li Hongde walked in and immediately saw Lu Feng sitting at the long table with several students surrounding him.
"Looks like we all know each other." Li Hongde smiled and placed a brown paper bag on the lab table.
Zhou Mingyuan immediately stood up straight, abandoning his previous nonchalant demeanor, and respectfully greeted, "Teacher."
"Hello, teacher." Zhao Pengfei and the others also greeted him.
Lu Feng also stood up: "Teacher."
"Yes, please sit down." Li Hongde waved his hand, indicating that they didn't need to be so formal.
He walked over to Lu Feng, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "I have a meeting at the institute this morning, so I'm a bit short on time. I'll just give you a simple task to familiarize you with what our project is about."
He pulled a document out of the brown paper bag and handed it to Lu Feng.
"This is the basic framework of the gearbox dynamics model that we are currently using in our project, which contains four different sets of operating parameters."
Li Hongde pointed to an empty computer next to him: "Your task is simple: use the simulation software on this computer, input these four sets of parameters, build the corresponding simplified model, and then run the basic vibration data."
He paused, then turned to Zhou Mingyuan.
"Mingyuan, take Lu Feng under your wing, teach him how to use the software, and explain the basic data processing workflow to him."
"Okay, teacher," Zhou Mingyuan replied immediately.
Li Hongde gave a few more instructions about the project meeting, then hurriedly left with the remaining documents.
As soon as he left, the atmosphere in the laboratory instantly relaxed again.
Zhou Mingyuan picked up the document from Lu Feng's hand, glanced at it, and then pulled him to the empty computer.
"Come on, junior, let me teach you first."
He skillfully opened a simulation software called M-Dynamics. The interface was entirely in English and filled with various complex parameter windows and toolbars.
"This software was developed with the participation of our own college. It is specifically designed for multibody dynamics simulation and is more suitable than general-purpose software on the market," Zhou Mingyuan explained while operating the mouse.
"Look here, this is the model import area, this is the material property library, and this is the boundary condition settings..."
Zhou Mingyuan demonstrated step by step how to create a new project, how to define the geometric parameters and meshing stiffness of gears, and how to apply loads and speeds.
Lu Feng listened very attentively.
He had never used this software in his previous life, but its underlying logic was similar to the commercial software he used in the factory.
"...The final step is to run the solver, and the data obtained will automatically generate a report." Zhou Mingyuan finished demonstrating the last step and pointed to a few lines of code on the screen.
"The teacher gave you four sets of data, and the working conditions are all different. Each set will take about twenty minutes to complete. Don't rush. It would be good if you could finish one set today."
He patted Lu Feng on the shoulder, with a hint of encouragement: "Take your time, and call me anytime if you don't understand anything."
"Okay, thank you, senior." Lu Feng nodded.
Zhou Mingyuan returned to his seat, put on his headphones, and began processing his mountain of literature data.
Zhao Pengfei and Sun Hao were also engrossed in their work, leaving only the sound of keyboards clicking and computer fans humming in the lab.
Lu Feng sat up straight and flexed his fingers.
Following the process taught by Zhou Mingyuan, he began to build the first model.
He imported the geometry, defined the material, set the meshing pairs... without pausing for a moment.
When setting boundary conditions, he found that the software's default damping model was a simple linear function.
At high speeds, the linear damping model can lead to severe distortion of the results.
Instead of using it directly, he paused for a moment and typed out a simple nonlinear damping correction formula from memory in the custom function window.
This formula is not complicated; it simply adds a squared term for velocity to the original formula, but it is enough to improve the accuracy of the simulation results by an order of magnitude.
After doing all this, he clicked the "Run" button.
The computer's processor usage instantly spiked to 90%, and a complex progress bar began to slowly advance on the screen.
He didn't sit idle; he immediately began working on building a second model.
With the experience gained from the first model, the second model was built much faster.
The third one...
The fourth one...
Time flies when you're focused.
When Lu Feng finished setting up the fourth model and clicked to run it, he felt a slight soreness in his neck.
He leaned back in his chair and turned his head slightly.
Before I knew it, the sunlight outside the window had become quite dazzling, and it was almost noon.
On the other side, Zhou Mingyuan took off his headphones and stretched.
He spent the whole morning finally finishing his part of the literature review report.
He picked up his water glass, took a sip, and habitually glanced towards Lu Feng, wanting to see how his junior was doing and whether he was still stuck on the software interface.
"It would be good if we could complete one-tenth of the first set of data."
Upon seeing this, he froze on the spot.
On Lu Feng's computer screen, four independent simulation task windows were arranged side by side.
The first three windows have already generated complete color cloud maps and data curves, and the status is displayed as "Completed".
The progress bar in the fourth window had already reached 99%.
Zhou Mingyuan's water glass wobbled, and a few drops of water spilled onto the table.
He suddenly stood up, rushed behind Lu Feng, and stared at the screen.
"Wait...wait!" His voice was a little hoarse. "You...you're running the fourth group now?"
Lu Feng was staring out the window in a daze when he was startled and turned around.
"Yeah." He pointed to the screen, "We've just started running, senior, is there anything wrong?"
"A problem?" Zhou Mingyuan felt his brain wasn't quite working properly.
"No...no problem...I mean, the teacher gave us a week's worth of work."
Now it was Lu Feng's turn to be stunned.
"A week?" He was somewhat surprised. "I thought it was a task for this morning... I thought the model wasn't too complicated, so I figured I could finish it in one go."
Zhou Mingyuan: ? ? ?
Damn it, don't you want to read what you're saying?
Zhou Mingyuan then moved closer to the screen, not to check the progress, but to quickly flip through the model files and parameter settings created by Lu Feng.
When he saw the nonlinear correction term that Lu Feng had added to the damping model, his breath caught in his throat for a moment.
"This...this variable damping function..." He pointed to the line of code, then turned to look at Lu Feng, "This isn't built into the software, is it? And here, you used the variational method to calculate the meshing stiffness? Freshmen...are you already learning this in your freshmen?"
"No," Lu Feng replied calmly.
"There are related introductions at the back of the advanced mathematics textbook; I learned it on my own."
Self-taught?
Zhou Mingyuan felt like he was hearing a fairy tale.
Their conversation wasn't loud, but it was exceptionally clear in the quiet laboratory.
Zhao Pengfei and Sun Hao, who were sitting not far away, exchanged a glance and both saw a hint of curiosity in each other's reactions.
Zhao Pengfei simply took off his headphones, stood up, and walked over.
"What's wrong, Lao Zhou? Why are you so easily startled?"
Zhou Mingyuan didn't answer, he just pointed at the screen with his finger, opened his mouth, but didn't know what to say.
Zhao Pengfei looked in the direction he was pointing, puzzled.
As a senior student in charge of simulations in the group, his familiarity with the software was second only to Zhou Mingyuan.
His expression changed after just one glance.
"Holy crap!" Zhao Pengfei couldn't help but blurt out a curse. "This model... the quality of the mesh generation, and the boundary treatment... it's just too clean!"
He pushed Zhou Mingyuan aside, sat down at the computer, and began rapidly operating the keyboard and mouse, pulling up Lu Feng's first model file and carefully examining every detail.
Sun Hao also curiously came over.
The more Zhao Pengfei looked, the more horrified he became.
He pointed to one of the parameter settings.
"This...this idea, Professor Li mentioned it briefly during our last meeting, saying that we could try introducing nonlinear factors to improve accuracy, but I tried it several times, and the model just diverged! How...how did he do it?"
The only sound in the entire laboratory was the hum of the computer fans.
Zhou Mingyuan, Zhao Pengfei, and Sun Hao stared at Lu Feng as if he were a monster.
Zhou Mingyuan's mind went blank, with only one thought swirling wildly within him.
No, is this a freshman?
