How much do you know about Chapter 49?
As everyone left, the oak door to the office closed, Dumbledore clapped his hands, and the silent, wandless spell spread out, causing the portraits that had been buzzing with discussion to fall silent.
They closed their eyes and stopped moving, as if their magic had been suddenly taken away!
Vaughn looked at Dumbledore, and Dumbledore looked at him.
After a moment, Dumbledore smiled and said, "Vaughn, I must say, your strength has greatly surprised me. I..."
Before he could finish speaking, Vaughn interrupted, "I thought you kept me here to explain something to me."
Dumbledore remained silent.
"Explain why the Philosopher's Stone was kept at Hogwarts? Why would anyone want to steal it? Why was it so casually hidden on the fourth floor? And why...?"
Vaughn stared at Dumbledore, his tone intimidating: "...The Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher you hired cast the Killing Curse on his own student? Why did you clean up the signs of the battle on the fourth floor and instruct us not to let Professor McGonagall know? What exactly are you planning, Albus?"
For Vaughn, the final battle with Voldemort was an accident.
He had originally planned to just follow Quirrell and see if that incompetent fellow could find the Philosopher's Stone through the Cerberus, Lou Williams.
Because he had seen the Mirror of Erised in Dumbledore's office.
Dumbledore hasn't put the Philosopher's Stone into the mirror yet; once it's in, he'll have a very hard time accessing it.
Even though he knew Dumbledore might have hidden the Philosopher's Stone somewhere else, with Quirrell and Voldemort leading the way, he didn't mind secretly going to find out.
It was just an accident...
Vaughn hadn't expected that his and Ron's departure would lead Harry and Hermione to decide to go find them on their own.
Of course, it was just a small oversight.
He hadn't thought much of it at first, until on the way to the principal's office, when he was helping Harry up, Harry whispered something to him:
"Vaughn, I... I think I can hear the black-robed man's thoughts... Although it's intermittent, I know all about his anger and hatred when you hurt him... Also, Hermione and I going to the fourth floor was probably influenced by him..."
Harry wanted to ask Vaughn if he was under some kind of dark magic.
He didn't notice Vaughn's strange expression.
The accident wasn't caused by Harry and Hermione acting on their own, but rather because Harry received Voldemort's thoughts.
This wouldn't have been too surprising, but the problem was that Vaughn had personally tested it a month ago, and Harry hadn't established a connection with the Horcrux!
In the original story, the connection between Voldemort and the Horcruxes only became closer as Voldemort was resurrected and the other Horcruxes gradually disappeared.
He was very curious as to why the change had suddenly occurred.
Vaughn thought of the real force that exists in this world—fate!
The power he finds most incomprehensible, most awe-inspiring, and most desired in this world.
This sudden accident made Vaughn realize that his previous idea of lingering on the periphery of the savior and the dark lord's fate and observing silently needed to be changed.
So at this moment, facing Dumbledore, he decided to strike first.
This barrage of questions surprised Dumbledore, his deep blue eyes shining even brighter. "You discovered his identity? You saw him? Did Harry see him?"
Occlumency continued to operate. Vaughn looked directly into Dumbledore's eyes, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "No, but that nauseating garlic smell... I don't think I'll ever forget it." He then feigned suspicion. "You mentioned Harry? Is all of this related to Harry?"
Dumbledore remained silent.
His Legilimency saw nothing unusual; he only saw the anger and doubt in the young wizard's heart.
There is also a desire for the truth.
If the person in front of him is an adult, he can still intimidate them.
If it were a simpleton like Ron in front of him (Ron: ?), he could also play the fool.
But after several encounters with Vaughn, Dumbledore realized that the man was not someone to be trifled with. After a moment's thought, he sighed and said, "It's a long story, Vaughn. I can tell you, but I hope you'll keep it a secret."
"Don't worry, I'll keep it a secret!"
Vaughn remained expressionless. He had kept those secrets for 11 years; who had ever heard him utter a word about them?
……
Snape didn't know how he got back to his office.
His mind was in a mess.
Past memories, like maggots clinging to a bone, have clung to me again.
The fragrance of medicinal herbs that usually intoxicated him in the office couldn't calm his mind today; images flashed before his eyes.
Many, many years ago, he and a green-eyed girl were lying by the pond.
Willow leaves swirled around them like birds in flight.
Ten years ago, a woman with the same green eyes lay helplessly in the ruins of the Potter family home, and he held her cold body and wept bitterly…
He thought that was the end. Although Dumbledore always said that the person who killed her was not dead, he always thought that was just Dumbledore's excuse, a senile paranoid old man.
But today, he sensed... the evil, filthy magic of his former master!
"boom!"
Lost in thought, he accidentally added some ingredients, and the crucible in front of him burst into flames, ruining the entire pot of "life-or-death water".
Snape just stared blankly until a blue, translucent phoenix flew in through the window, landed on his shoulder, and whispered in his ear.
Upon hearing the Patronus's message, Snape's sorrow and fear vanished instantly, replaced by a surge of anger. He rushed to the Headmaster's office, pushed open the door, and demanded in a cold, mocking voice:
"Dumbledore, the great White Wizard, is it not enough that you've harmed me alone, now you have to drag Vaughn down with you? What new tricks have you come up with? Are you preparing to cultivate an even more useful henchman for our savior? Or perhaps another double agent?"
In the office, the portraits remained silent with their eyes closed, and the entire room was deathly still.
Dumbledore stood before the Pensieve, seemingly lost in thought. Hearing Snape's question, he snapped out of his reverie and gave a helpless smile.
"Severus, you've known him longer than I have, you should know how smart he is."
Snape scoffed, "So, you're going to tell him your plan? And maybe even use Ron Weasley's friendship with Harry to get him to help you groom a savior? Ha, after all these years, you haven't changed a bit!"
But his words only made Dumbledore's expression more helpless.
Dumbledore pondered for a moment and said, "No, he offered to help me mentor Harry..."
Snape: "...What nonsense are you talking about?"
He said it was a deal...
