Chapter 19 Goblin Lair
Chapter 19 Goblin Lair
Upon entering the cave, Gerns glanced at its size, and his unease grew stronger.
The cave wasn't very deep, and it soon seemed like the bottom was visible.
"Gurgle..."
Along with the faint light of the torches, a strange sound accompanied by whispers came from around the corner ahead. At the same time, the group noticed that there was also a faint light flickering gently around the corner.
Enzo, who was walking at the front of the group, could not contain his excitement, but due to the most basic discipline of a soldier, he did not rush forward to start the attack.
The members of the entire third squadron exchanged glances, then lowered their pace and slowly made their way toward the corner of the cave.
The closer you get to the corner, the clearer the whispering voice becomes, yet you can't make out what it's saying.
When the entire squadron reached the corner, Gerns signaled everyone to stop. He then pressed himself against the corner, cautiously peeking out and looking towards the area behind it.
Deep inside the cave, a group of short goblins stood behind a goblin shaman. A person wearing a dark purple cloak, whose face was obscured, stood in front of the goblin shaman, muttering incomprehensible words.
"A goblin shaman?!"
Gerns' pupils contracted as he looked at the small, thin figure. The other squadron members behind him, who had also seen the figure, covered their mouths and gasped in surprise.
As a variant of goblins, goblin shamans are just as evil and greedy as goblins. However, compared to their greedy and bloodthirsty cousins, goblin shamans, despite their small and weak appearance, possess the same intelligence as a normal fifteen or sixteen-year-old child.
They are more cold-blooded and ruthless, and are proficient in some simple spells. In addition, they have a rudimentary understanding of Goblin and Common.
Some mage organizations located in the southern part of the continent would specifically recruit young goblin shamans and train them to become magic servants. Some magic servants could even withstand the army of half a city on their own.
Almost every goblin shaman possesses the ability to lead an entire goblin tribe after reaching adulthood.
The danger and audacity of goblins who obtain the title of "boss" will increase exponentially due to the ferocity and brutality of their leader.
On the other hand, compared to the number of goblins, which are as numerous as cockroaches and spread throughout the continent, goblin shamans are not many.
Even after they grow up, they are scattered among various goblin tribes, and often their underlings are responsible for satisfying their greed for treasures or food.
If it weren't for their greedy nature or bad luck, it would be extremely difficult for a low-level adventurer to encounter a goblin shaman within their activity range.
Fortunately, Gerns and his men were soldiers who had received some military training, and their numbers were not small, so dealing with a group of goblins who only knew how to burn, kill, and plunder was not a problem.
The biggest problem right now is the purple-robed man standing in front of the goblin shaman.
Because the purple-robed man's face was obscured, no one in the entire squadron knew his background or what he was discussing with the goblin shaman.
"Who exactly is this person? How does he possess the ability to communicate with goblin shamans?"
Enzo looked at the purple-robed figure deep in the cave and raised an eyebrow slightly, a hint of doubt in his expression.
Although Choms seemed like a rather carefree middle-aged man, he was extremely calm at this moment, putting his index finger to his lips to signal everyone to be quiet, and then whispered, "Let's wait and see. Who knows what will happen if we rush in now."
The group nodded slightly and then fell silent.
After the man in purple robes stopped muttering to himself, he raised his staff.
The dark purple crystal bead on the staff lit up, and a small magic circle appeared in front of the black-robed man, enveloping one of the goblins behind the goblin shaman.
As thin, dark purple rays of light gradually emerged from the magic circle and entered the goblin's body, the goblin's face began to show pain, and it made whimpering noises.
This situation did not last long. Soon, the goblin's eyes lost their original color and were replaced by an endless thirst for killing.
"Finally, we succeeded. Now, what's left...?"
To test just how powerful the blessed goblins were, the goblin shaman turned around and looked at the many goblins behind him.
Whether startled by this incredible scene or afraid that the goblin shaman would choose them to be guinea pigs, the goblins all took two steps back.
However, the purple-robed man clearly had no intention of letting them go. He waved his wand again and, taking advantage of the fact that the other goblins in the cave did not have time to escape, lit up the same magic circle under their feet once more.
After being enveloped by the magic circle, the goblins seemed to be tormented by it, clutching their heads in agony.
"To use goblins for this kind of experiment, that's really no good! Although goblins aren't exactly good either."
Enzo looked at the scene before him and wished he could grind his back teeth to dust.
"It seems we must inform the Baron immediately." Choms frowned. "If this is allowed to continue, it will threaten the kingdom sooner or later. No, not just the kingdom, it could endanger all of humanity!"
"I agree." Gerns nodded. "This kind of magic with blessing effects is clearly black magic, and we must never allow such magic to exist in the world."
After exchanging glances, the group was just about to leave this troublesome place when someone accidentally kicked a small stone, making a crisp "thud".
The sound, neither too loud nor too soft, startled the purple-robed man inside the cave: "Hmm? Who's there?"
"Oh no! We've been discovered!"
Upon hearing the slightly furious voice of the man in purple robes, the entire Third Squadron froze on the spot. Gerns felt a chill run down his spine, and cold sweat broke out on his back.
"Captain, let's fight him. We have plenty of people here, what are we afraid of with just a few goblins?"
"Yeah, yeah, are we afraid of him?"
Enzo realized that their actions had been exposed, and his fighting spirit grew even stronger. The other members of the squadron echoed Enzo's suggestion.
Is this all there is to it? But that makes sense; they're just a few goblins. Even if they're only enhanced by dark magic, they can't escape the fact that they're just lowly creatures.
After a moment's hesitation, Gerns calmed his unease and looked up at the entire squadron. He saw that every member of the squadron had an urgent and determined look on their face.
Even Captain Choms stood with the squadron members: "Why don't we agree to their offer? Our country is at war right now, and it's hard to spare any attention for other matters. Let's eliminate this threat as soon as possible before this dark magician gains power."
"Then let's do as you say and get started."
After receiving affirmation from Choms and the other members, Gerns had no choice but to nod.
