Chapter 3: Where did the notebook go? The notebook is dead!
"What are you going to do with him? Kill him or hand him over to the police?"
Peter was momentarily confused by Oz's question.
"What do you mean?"
"It's just to confirm your mindset."
"I'm perfectly fine! He killed Uncle Ben, I'm not going to let him get away with this!"
Peter said impatiently, "If you're not willing to help me, then I'll go find him myself!"
However, Oz just stared at Peter and continued to repeat the same question.
"So you still haven't answered me how you plan to deal with him."
He needs to know Peter's decision.
After all, he was in a contractual relationship with Peter for a long time afterward.
The many misfortunes that should have happened to Peter will gradually disappear with the arrival of Oz, or at least not be so tragic.
If we apply the death of Uncle Ben to other superheroes, it would be considered background information before they became heroes.
But if it were Spider-Man, it would only be the tip of the iceberg of a tragedy.
There's a whole host of exciting storylines to discover, including Gwen's death, Meryl Streep's peril, an identity crisis, her mentor's descent into madness, media smear campaigns, and her isolation.
Oh, there's even a story about a screenwriter personally abducting someone's girlfriend.
Oz had ulterior motives; otherwise, he wouldn't have raised this question now, instead of waiting until Peter caught the murderer.
"I...I...I don't know."
Peter desperately wanted to say the words "kill him," but no matter how chaotic his emotions were, his long-standing upbringing prevented him from uttering them.
Oz's scarlet eyes looked particularly menacing in the night, and under that gaze, Peter involuntarily lowered his head.
He asked in a low voice, "What would happen if I said I was going to kill him?"
"There will be no consequences," Oz said. "I only need your attitude."
If Peter Parker of this universe is willing to take that step, then Oz would be happy to develop him into the ultimate Spider-Man.
Spider-Man has many versions, and while each version is interesting and refreshing, the most popular one is still the friendly neighbor.
So, in Oz's view, he still hopes that the Spider-Man of this universe will uphold that kind heart.
"I don't know, I really don't know!"
Peter ran his fingers through his hair, scratching with a pained expression.
If I were to truly kill that murderer, then he would be the one who deserves to die the most.
It was his mistake that led to Uncle Ben's death.
Oz was fairly satisfied with Peter's attitude at this moment. "I thought you were going to seek revenge."
"revenge?"
Peter shook his head, his voice rising a few decibels: "You simply don't understand. I clearly had the ability to stop it, but I chose to ignore it!"
Oz let out a long "Oh," and then said, "So, Ben wouldn't have died..."
Peter yelled in alarm, "You're not allowed to mention Uncle Ben's name!"
"You think it's okay just because you say so? Then I won't bring it up again."
Oz suddenly changed the subject: "Before I became a raven, I looked for doujinshi on online forums, but I couldn't find any. Do you know why?"
Peter sensed something was amiss. "Why?"
"Because Ben is dead."
Peter immediately punched Oz on the head.
But the moment his fist touched Oz's feathers, his vision blurred, and when it returned, he found himself in an unfamiliar place.
"?!"
Peter stared wide-eyed, looking around. He was no longer in his familiar room, but had arrived at the entrance of an unfamiliar tavern.
And Oz, the culprit, stood on his shoulders and said:
"The murderer who killed your uncle is inside drinking. You should know what to do."
Peter's head was buzzing. "Wait, weren't we just—"
Oz smacked Peter on the head with his wing. "What are you talking about, buddy? I'm a talking raven, and you gained superpowers after being bitten by a spider? The world's gone mad!"
"..."
Peter thought that was the logic, but this sudden teleportation was obviously wrong!
As he drew closer to the tavern entrance, Peter's mood grew increasingly somber.
Just as Peter was about to push open the tavern door, he suddenly turned to look at Oz.
"I remember you said last night that you wanted me to become a better Spider-Man. I don't know what that meant, but I'd like to know..."
"What would you do if my next actions didn't meet your expectations?"
Oz blinked, his bright red pupils shining like rubies.
"I don't know."
"..."
Peter, finding himself in an awkward situation, pushed open the tavern door and went inside.
Contrary to expectations of a lively scene, the pub was sparsely populated with only a few people. There was no rock music to rouse people, but rather long, relaxing country tunes. The old bartender in the center of the bar was still wiping glasses with a white cloth, seemingly unconcerned about Peter's arrival.
Peter quickly scanned the entire tavern, finally fixing his gaze on a corner.
A blond man drinking alone in silence.
Peter will never forget that face.
His anger was like a fuse ignited by flames in an instant, and without saying a word, Peter picked up a chair.
Seeing this, Oz quickly reminded Peter, "I have to make this clear to you. Usually, trouble in a tavern is caused by arguments among regular customers. Once an outsider wants to cause trouble, the people in the tavern will spontaneously unite."
Peter glanced sideways and noticed that someone was already looking in his direction.
He was very annoyed and said, "How can you be sure they're not watching you?"
Oz shrugged and then flew onto the head of a black man in the pub.
Peter didn't understand Oz's behavior, but the next second, he saw Oz swing his wings like a spinning top and whip the black man's head hard!
"Drinking?! You dare to drink?! Have you even finished picking the cotton today before you start drinking?!"
Peter: "???"
The black man seemed not to hear Oz's words, continuing to drink his wine, only occasionally scratching his head.
Oz plopped down on the man's head. "See, of course they can't be looking at me."
Peter had no choice but to adjust his chair and sit down, his eyes fixed on the man who had killed Uncle Ben.
"What am I supposed to do? Just let him drink without worry?!"
"Maybe, how about we order some fries to start?"
"screw you!"
Peter discovered that his conversation with Oz was a telepathic exchange, during which he didn't even open his mouth.
"Seriously, aren't you going to order anything? I've seen the bartender's eyes glued to you the whole time. Order some fries, though it's pretty tasty to steal someone else's fries..."
Even without Oz's prompting, Peter noticed the bartender's arrival.
The old bartender, with a white cloth slung over his shoulder, walked up to Peter.
"Let me make one thing clear: I don't sell alcohol to minors, but I do have milk, provided you're willing to buy it," the old bartender said.
Peter blushed slightly. "Then I'll have a glass of milk, thank you."
Oz yelled from the side, "An extra serving of fries!"
Peter had no interest in paying attention to this guy and continued to silently stare at the back of the murderer who killed Uncle Ben.
After waiting for a few minutes, a steaming cup of milk was brought over.
Just as Peter was about to reach into his pocket for money and pray that the milk in the tavern wouldn't be too expensive.
The old tavern owner said, "It's on you."
Peter hesitated for a moment: "I can pay."
The old bartender waved his hand, "Finish your drink and go home quickly, so your family won't worry. I don't want to see the embarrassing scene of your family causing trouble in my bar."
After saying that, the old bartender turned and left without waiting for Peter's reaction.
Peter looked at the other person's back, his ears twitching as he heard the other person muttering softly.
"Rebellious teenagers are so hard to deal with. They like to run away from home whenever they argue with their families, and they even come to my bar. It's really a nightmare."
"I didn't argue with my family!"
Peter wanted to explain to the old bartender that he hadn't argued with his family, but the bartender's words immediately brought back bad memories.
He was reminded once again of the tragedy of last night.
His argument with Uncle Ben was the worst decision he ever made in his life, bar none.
It will become the deepest imprint on one's heart, indelible even until death.
"..."
Oz noticed that Peter almost instantly went into an emo state, and couldn't help but feel how heavy Ben Parker's death must have been for the kid.
A single act of deliberate disregard led to the loss of a loved one.
It was like a cruel joke played by fate, and for a boy who had just gained superpowers, it was a devastating blow.
Oz could only hope that Peter would pull through, since he couldn't really help much with this, at most he could just tell fewer of Uncle Ben's hellish jokes in the future.
In any case, Peter would not experience the loss of any more relatives in the days to come.
Snapped!
Why did you hit me?!
Peter covered the back of his head, staring wide-eyed as Oz retracted his wings.
Oz blew on his wing feathers and said, "Stop daydreaming, kid. That guy's about to leave."
