Chapter 75: Keep chasing, you can keep chasing!
Chapter 75: Keep chasing, you can keep chasing!
Okay, let's rewind to an hour ago.
Gotham City, Crime Alley.
Jaeger, who had changed his number back, was standing outside his apartment, checking his phone for messages while waiting for Burks to unload the motorcycle so he could take his new car for a spin.
He didn't actually add many people. Apart from some random comments on social media platforms and posts forwarded by Dr. Leslie, whom he followed, such as "10 Dangerous Experiments You Should Never Do When You're Home Alone," his messages were basically just about Batman and Bruce.
In summary, Batman's message is quite simple: he doesn't know the new vigilante who appeared in Gotham City, but he will keep an eye on him.
As for the message from Bruce Wayne, it was unexpected for Jaeger.
[Bruce Wayne]: There will be a charity dinner next week related to the Crime Alley Dawn Project. Are you interested?
[Bruce Wayne]: Of course, while this dinner was primarily for Project Dawn, it was also to thank you.
[Great!]: Thank me?
[Bruce Wayne]: Thank you for healing Batman.
[Bruce Wayne]: You might not think it's a big deal, but I have to admit, it's incredibly significant for Batman, and for me as well.
Jaeger, however, failed to grasp the very subtle true meaning hidden in Bruce's message. He only thought about it for a moment before suddenly understanding.
[Wow!]: Wow, you and Batman have a really good relationship.
[Great!]: I don't know how you two met, but you hit it off at the Gotham Building Symposium?
Bruce Wayne: ...
Bruce Wayne: Never mind, it's nothing.
[Bruce Wayne]: I'll send you a dinner invitation.
Bruce has logged off.
Jaeger thought, wait a minute, isn't this the dinner party that Poison Mist mentioned? ...If I really agree to Bruce's request, then I'll have to play two roles at the banquet by myself?
Well, we can just take it one step at a time.
After all, if all else fails, there are many ways to use only one of your identities.
With a good attitude, Jaeger turned his attention back to the motorcycle that Burke had spat out. As soon as he stepped on, he saw Burke, who was sitting on the front of the motorcycle, wag his tail and shove the writing tablet into Jaeger's hand.
Jaeger looked at it:
Master, you've worked hard.
[I never imagined your money was all taken from rich people. So touching.]
Jaeger: "..."
I feel like my image has started to look strange again.
He could only expressionlessly wrap the Burke around his hand, then put on his helmet, bent down, and drove off for a drive, trying to avoid seeing or worrying about it.
However, the drive wasn't aimless; Jaeger had a clear goal and accelerated straight in a certain direction.
He wanted to go to the building where Jason Todd lived to check on things.
……
……
"So that's why you suddenly appeared here out of nowhere?"
Jason, who was standing next to the motorcycle, was looking at the tires with habitual gaze, then suddenly looked up as if he realized something, and asked Jaeger, who was taking off his helmet.
"Yes, I'll take you for a ride." Jaeger shook his head. "Don't worry, I have another helmet here."
"That's not what I care about." Jason choked for a moment, "You..."
"By the way, how have you been these past few days? Do you have any plans?" Jaeger, however, had just missed what the other person had just said. "I heard that Ms. Catherine has been invited to join Project Dawn, that's great."
Jason was taken aback when he heard this, and then he realized that although the person on the other end of the line seemed to want to take him out for a drive, he was actually asking about his recent situation in a roundabout way.
After all, he hadn't gone to school before, and had spent his time struggling in the crime alley. Everything he did was just to help Catherine live a little longer, and a little longer still.
But he seemed to have forgotten himself.
Although... he didn't care about this before.
Jason, who wasn't used to receiving kindness from people other than his mother, was momentarily taken aback, but he quickly pretended not to care and hummed in agreement: "Okay, I'll reluctantly agree to go with you."
He took Jaeger's helmet and climbed into the car: "Regarding Project Dawn, although the people sent by Wayne Enterprises said very good things, but..."
"What's wrong?" Jaeger asked. "Is there something you feel is wrong?"
"Not really." Jason hesitated. "It's just... I've heard a bit about Bruce Wayne's reputation, and it doesn't seem very good."
"..." Jaeger hadn't expected Jason to be thinking about this, but he couldn't reveal that the man was actually pretending.
Rather, Bruce would prefer to see this effect achieved.
So Jaeger could only say, "You may doubt Bruce's reputation for being unreliable and absurd in other areas, but when it comes to charity... believe me, he's serious."
"Alright." Jason was still willing to trust Jaeger, after all, Jaeger had just saved Catherine. "Since you say so, then his offer to send us to school shouldn't be a problem, right?"
"go to school?"
"Kids around my age in my area all received invitations," Jason said. "It's like they could go to school for free, but I always thought it was a trap."
Jaeger hadn't expected Jason to have this line of thinking.
No wonder Wayne Enterprises' various charitable policies and projects in Gotham City are always difficult to implement. After all, some deeply ingrained things, ways of thinking, and habits are hard to change in an instant.
Making Gotham even a little bit better is indeed a long and arduous task.
Moreover, if it weren't for the "Unknown Identity Card," Jaeger might not have known that Gotham City's current state of affairs was actually inextricably linked to a certain court of owls...
Jaeger could only sigh silently before answering Jason, "Yes, but... do you want to go to school?"
Jason remained silent for a long time, then said firmly, "I want to."
"That's good," Jaeger said. "If you encounter any problems at school, or if you have any issues with the Dawn Project or other student aid programs, you can tell me."
"Just think of me as...the supervisor of these projects," Jaeger thought for a moment.
After all, it was just a matter of convenience, and Bruce Wayne himself probably wouldn't want to see any problems arise during the implementation of the project he was seriously promoting.
With the conversation over, Jaeger, truly wanting nothing more than to take Jason for a spin in Gotham, set off on his journey.
Things are different now. If anyone dares to block his way, Jaeger will show them what a truly evil level 2 adult wizard looks like...
But what Jaeger didn't expect was that he wouldn't encounter the criminals who randomly spawn in Gotham City, nor Batman beating up the randomly spawning criminals, nor the GCPD arriving at the scene to pick up the criminals being beaten by Batman...
He did run into someone he had heard about in the news this morning.
It wasn't even Jaeger himself who discovered it; rather, Jason suddenly spoke up to alert him: "Wait, did you see that thing?"
"What?"
Jaeger instinctively braked, nearly throwing Jason off. He frantically grabbed Jason's helmet and shoved him back into place before finally letting out a sigh of relief.
Jason, true to his reputation as a tough guy who can survive in Crime Alley, nearly flew off the spot, yet still managed to point in a certain direction and say, "Look."
So Jaeger looked in the direction Jason was pointing and was instantly stunned.
It was a figure moving through the corridor, slender and incredibly agile, with a cape resembling bat wings.
Seemingly sensing something was wrong, the figure flashed away and disappeared from their sight.
"..." Jaeger narrowed his eyes, then suddenly spoke with interest, "Jason."
"Want to go and chase after that figure?"
