Chapter 48: The Cruel Truth Behind the Scenes
Chapter 48: The Cruel Truth Behind the Scenes
The phone left a message and then hung up.
"You damn senior."
"Beep beep beep".
Li Yisen shook his head. After the policewoman's interference, the nausea he felt when entering the sewer was significantly reduced.
Unbeknownst to him, another man was observing him from a distance using binoculars.
.
In the dimly lit sewer, shoes splashed up dirty water.
Lee Ethan hadn't seen a single homeless person along the way until a corpse submerged in sewage made him pause.
This was a charred corpse. Ordinary corpses in the sewers might not be unusual, but charred corpses were certainly rare. What concerned him more was why no carrion-eating creatures were feeding on it.
Continuing forward, we soon arrived at the area where we remembered rats were present, but there were still no large rats. Instead, we saw two small rats, and there were even some burn marks on the wall.
Li Yisen frowned. This was a sewer, which could very well contain methane (marsh gas) or chlorine compounds. The former would explode if ignited, and the latter would release poison gas when burned. Who would be so unafraid of dying by burning a large fire in the sewer?
Suddenly another charred corpse came into view. This one was lying in a dry place. A strange feeling arose in Li Yisen's mind, just like when he touched the tears of a girl in despair.
Lee hesitated for a moment before finally taking off his gloves and touching it.
The next second, the hallucination began.
A homeless man was sleeping on a tattered blanket when he suddenly woke up to a noise. He saw a group of people in protective suits and gas masks throwing some kind of powder and even burning some rats with flamethrowers.
Before the homeless man could escape, a restraint fork had already subdued him, and then he heard faint voices talking.
"This person may already be infected, what should we do?"
"Burn it. The company doesn't need this kind of test subject."
The homeless man begged for mercy frantically.
"No, no, I won't say anything, I'm perfectly healthy, please..."
Before the homeless man could finish speaking, flames engulfed him completely. The restraining fork held him firmly, preventing him from breaking free. Screams echoed as the fire cut through the sewer, along with the sound of two people talking.
"I heard the company is going to donate tens of millions to the municipal government."
"There's no other way. With such a big incident, of course we have to take care of everything."
The homeless man's eyes, which were gradually drying out, stared intently at the two indifferent fellow human beings, his thoughts filled with curses.
"Why, why did I suffer such misfortune? I was only unemployed for three months and I had to become a homeless person. Now I'm going to be burned to death in the sewers. I hate it. I hate all of you who are living well. I hate it so much."
As the hallucination vanished, Li Yisen's strong body shuddered as if he had been hit by a cold wind.
That's really weird, and those people's clothes had the word "GT" written on them.
Lee Esen couldn't connect it to any particular organization, but a quick check of the donations would reveal the answer.
If the scene and evidence have been destroyed, is there any point in him continuing the investigation?
Just as Li Yisen was still determined to kill two rats and put them in a bag, a train suddenly passed overhead, making a very loud and deafening rumbling sound, and a figure was also rapidly approaching.
When Li Yisen heard a sound and looked over, a figure had already rushed out from around the corner, the two only a few meters apart.
Lee Ethan quickly threw away the bag, drew his gun, and moved to fire, as did his opponent.
"Bang bang"
"Bang bang"
The bullet struck the spot where Lee Ethan had just been standing, extinguishing the only light, while his own bullet struck the newcomer in the chest, but the man still charged forward relentlessly.
Bulletproof vest?
Just as Li Yisen began to suspect something, the other party kicked out, which he blocked with his arm, and the pistol was knocked away at the same time.
The familiar, fast-paced attacks confirmed to Li Yisen that the newcomer was indeed the hospital's assassin. However, after several days of training and honing his skills, he found it much easier to deal with, at least he wasn't being beaten the entire time.
Fist to fist, injury for injury.
His opponent was a strongman whose strength was not much less than his, but whose speed and fighting skills were slightly better.
Fortunately, the dim environment gave Lee Ethan, who had excellent eyesight, an advantage. He threw a punch that hit Josiah in the chin, causing him to stumble back a step, and his pistol fell right into the sewage.
Lee then grabbed Josiah's arm and tried to break it, but Josiah broke free and kicked him away.
Lee Ethan took a few steps back and patted the footprints on his clothes, revealing that he was wearing a bulletproof vest underneath.
It was alright; this match was back and forth rather than a complete rout.
"Hey, you're the one who killed your comrade yesterday, right?"
Josiah looked down and, seeing that he couldn't see the pistol, could only focus all his attention on the target in front of him.
"Yes, but we're not partners. We're just cleaners hired by the employer. You know about sewers, right? That stupid woman told you that."
He really is an assassin.
Lee Ethan tried to get the other person to say more.
"I didn't expect your employer to act so quickly and have already dealt with the unfavorable factors."
"Hehe, of course, this has happened more than once over the years. In fact, even if you investigate further, you won't find any clues. You have no idea what kind of behemoth is behind it all."
Li Yisen said calmly.
"GT's methods are indeed remarkable; no wonder they donated tens of millions to the municipal government."
Upon hearing this, Josiah was stunned.
"You actually knew? Oh well, even if you did know, there's nothing you can do about it. Nine days is enough time for all the evidence and clues to disappear, not to mention you'll die here."
"Is that so? I don't think so."
Suddenly, a huge gun appeared out of thin air in Li Yisen's hand; it was an old-fashioned heavy machine gun, the M2.
Josiah on the other side only noticed that the dark shadow seemed to be raising something, but had no idea where it was taken out from, and then there was a gunshot.
"Bang bang bang bang bang"
The bullets from the M2 heavy machine gun pierced through the man's bulletproof vest, creating several bloody holes.
"Cough cough cough, how is that possible?"
Josiah lay on the ground in disbelief, but the physical pain and loss of life proved that he was not hallucinating.
The footsteps drew near, and Li Yisen appeared before him.
"Is there anything else you'd like to say before you die?"
"Cough cough cough, Ethan Lee, don't be so smug. To them, you and I are nothing but ants and tools. They don't care whether you die or I die. If you're so capable, continue your investigation. You'll discover what true..."
[Ding! Killed an assassin. Assess their wealth and social status. Received a 2-star weapon reward.]
[Acquired 5 M67 defensive grenades.]
[A spherical cast iron projectile, filled with explosive B, produces approximately 700 fragments upon detonation, with an effective kill radius of about 5 meters.]
Lee Ethan knew that these were active-duty American military grenades, and that having five of them meant that the investigation hadn't been fruitless.
In the end, Lee Ethan soaked Josiah's body in sewage, so that it would swell up and no one would be able to recognize it. Besides, there were more than one or two bodies in the sewers, and the police wouldn't be idle investigating.
That evening, Li Yisen had already investigated and found out what GT was: Jichao Medical Laboratory, a subsidiary of America Biomedical Industry's top-level biotechnology research and development company, whose connections included various departments such as medicine and government.
"It really is a behemoth."
Li Yisen watched the donation video on his phone. The director said that because of the outbreak in the city, as a high-end industry in the city, it was necessary to fulfill social responsibility, so he donated tens of millions as a medical fund.
"Ladies and gentlemen, our company will be showcasing new products at a charity gala in 7 days. You are welcome to attend."
As Li Yisen watched the video, many images flashed through his mind.
During the nine days I spent in the hospital, I witnessed many people die from the Black Death, the cries of patients' families, Eileen's corpse, and the homeless man who was framed and burned to death.
The contrast between the various scenes and the seemingly gentle and welcoming person in charge of the laboratory in the video ignited a nameless rage in him.
Dozens of people died, more than a hundred were infected, and thousands were affected. And it was all just swept away like that?
Even disregarding others, shouldn't he seek revenge for being framed?
"Perhaps this is how the rules have always been in this country, but what if I'm unwilling to follow them?"
