Chapter 67 University

Chapter 67 University

The journey from Pengcheng to Yangcheng via the Yangpeng Highway takes more than three hours.

The scenery along the way kept changing, from skyscrapers to pastoral idylls. The two people in the car just sat quietly without saying a word.

"Officer Gu, where did you go to university?" Xia Wanying finally couldn't help but break the silence.

"Handong Police Academy"

"Oh, I didn't expect you to be formally trained in acting..." She paused, glancing cautiously at Gu Huai. Seeing that Gu Huai's expression was normal, she quickly changed the subject, "How's things in Handong? I've never been there."

Gu Huai thought for a moment and realized that his memories of university were already blurry.

Thirty years have passed, and there's not much I can remember.

That's why he insisted on coming to Shenzhen to become a policeman; there are too many acquaintances there, and he might just run into one.

"It's alright, it's just that it's much colder here." Gu Huai chuckled. "How about you? Yixian University should be pretty good, right?"

Xia Wanying nodded, "The campus is beautiful, with lots of old buildings, but the medical school buildings are too old, and the experimental equipment is a bit outdated."

What do you do at school? Attend classes?

"I spend most of my time in the lab," Xia Wanying said casually. "My university life was rather boring, unlike your police academy where there's physical training and shooting or something. We medical students just do experiments, write reports, and read literature every day, year after year, in the same cycle."

Gu Huai glanced at her. "Then why did you choose the path of forensic medicine?"

Xia Wanying didn't answer, but instead asked, "Then why did you become a police officer?"

"It was out of interest," Gu Huai replied without hesitation. "I wanted to do it, so I did it. It's that simple."

Xia Wanying was stunned for a moment; she clearly hadn't expected Gu Huai to give such an answer.

She had originally thought Gu Huai would say something about "upholding justice," but he just casually said, "It's just a hobby."

"You're just giving me the runaround."

"The truth often sounds like a perfunctory answer." Gu Huai focused on driving, not looking at her. "And you? Why did you choose forensic medicine?"

Xia Wanying was silent for a few seconds, then gave a very official answer, "I think it is very meaningful to be able to speak for the deceased."

Gu Huai glanced at Xia Wanying sideways, knowing in his heart that the girl was angry with him.

However, he didn't explain anything.

After all, people who haven't lived a full lifetime can hardly understand my current mindset.

And so, the car fell silent, with only the roar of the engine and the sound of the wind echoing inside.

Once inside Guangzhou, the roads gradually became congested.

Bicycles, motorcycles, and buses were crammed together, with horns blaring incessantly.

Gu Huai slowed down and moved slowly with the traffic. "Guangzhou is not as good as Shenzhen in terms of road planning."

Xia Wanying ignored Gu Huai's complaints. "Should we go to the school first or the Municipal Public Security Bureau?"

"Let's go to school first." Gu Huai thought for a moment. "The sooner we get the DNA done, the better."

Xia Wanying nodded and then pointed out the way to Gu Huai.

Just as Hebei University of Technology is not located in Hebei Province but in Tianjin, Yixian University is not located in Yixian but in Guangzhou.

Yixian University is located in the eastern part of Guangzhou. The campus is not large, but the entrance is very grand, with the school's name hanging on two large stone pillars.

The campus was very quiet, and the banyan trees on both sides of the road grew so tall that they blocked out the sun.

Walking under the shade of the trees, Gu Huai watched the groups of students passing by and a thought popped into his mind.

There was light in their eyes.

There was an upward, hopeful light in everyone's eyes.

At this point in time, everyone believes that as long as you are willing to work hard, you will definitely be able to live a good life.

Unlike thirty years later, when facing the possibility of unemployment upon graduation, and even if one finds a job, it will only be enough to make ends meet, far from the good life one envisions.

Oh, this damned beautiful picture of an economic upswing.

"What are you thinking about?" Xia Wanying's voice interrupted Gu Huai's thoughts.

"Nothing?" Gu Huai withdrew his gaze and shook his head gently. "Your school has so many trees."

After seeing that he was really talking about the scenery, Xia Wanying shook her head speechlessly and then walked towards the forensic building on her own.

The forensic building is located at the deepest part of the campus. It is a gray, three-story building covered with ivy.

The corridor was filled with the smell of formaldehyde, a smell that Gu Huai was already quite familiar with by this time.

Professor Wang Jingyuan's office is on the second floor.

When the two reached the door, they found it open. After knocking lightly twice and receiving a response, they stepped into the office.

As soon as he entered, Gu Huai saw a man in his fifties sitting behind a desk. He had gray hair, wore glasses, and was dressed in a faded plaid shirt.

Seeing Xia Wanying enter, he stood up with a smile, "Xia, you're here?"

"Teacher Wang." Xia Wanying walked in. "Let me introduce you. This is Gu Huai from the Criminal Investigation Division of Pengcheng City Public Security Bureau."

Gu Huai stepped forward and extended his hand. "Professor Wang, I'm sorry to bother you."

Wang Jingyuan grasped Gu Huai's hand and shook it vigorously. "Don't bother me. Xia just told me on the phone that you want to use DNA technology for identity verification?"

"Yes!" Gu Huai nodded and said, "The deceased's body is too badly decomposed. Not only can we not extract fingerprints, but the face is also ruined. Conventional methods cannot confirm the identity in a legal sense."

Wang Jingyuan pushed up his glasses. "This technology is still in the research stage. There are no mature precedents in China yet, but it is theoretically feasible. As long as there are comparison samples, I am confident that I can make it."

Seeing Professor Wang's confidence, Gu Huai breathed a sigh of relief. "Then I'll leave it to Professor Wang."

"No need to be so polite." Wang Jingyuan waved his hand. "To be honest, this is a rare opportunity for our research group to gain practical experience. We've always done it in the lab before and haven't had any real-world experience. In fact, I should thank you."

"I wouldn't dare," Gu Huai waved his hands repeatedly. "I only did a little bit of work. The reason the bureau agreed was all thanks to Master Duan Weiping. He went to our branch captain and explained the pros and cons, otherwise..."

"I'll call Lao Duan to thank him." He said, walking to the door and calling out into the hallway, "Come on over here!"

Not long after the sound faded, footsteps echoed from the other end of the corridor.

Seven or eight young people walked quickly out of the various rooms, each wearing a white lab coat and carrying notebooks or similar items.

Once most of the people had arrived, Wang Jingyuan pointed to Xia Wanying and said, "This is your senior sister Xia. She brought a real case. In the next few days, our research group will put aside all important matters and focus all our efforts on this case."

Having been in contact beforehand, these students knew that today's experiment was crucial, and many of them had their eyes light up.

They all called Xia Wanying "senior sister," making her a little embarrassed.

After getting to know each other, Wang Jingyuan began to give his students a final explanation of DNA knowledge, as a kind of review.

He explained it in great detail, from the double helix structure of DNA to restriction fragment length polymorphism, and then to polymerase chain reaction.

During the session, students kept asking questions, most of which were quite tricky because they had already learned the material before.

Wang Jingyuan patiently answered all the questions, just like he was teaching a primary school student.

Gu Huai realized that he couldn't understand what they were saying at all.

With his knowledge, he could only barely understand the basic principles of DNA; anything more advanced in molecular biology was like listening to gibberish to him.

However, this was not enough to discourage him. He has always believed that professional matters should be handled by professionals.

So he quietly slipped out of the crowd and walked to Xia Wanying's side.

"Dr. Xia, I'll go to the Municipal Bureau first. Let's keep in touch if anything happens here."

Xia Wanying nodded without turning her head.

Seeing her focused expression, Gu Huai didn't disturb her any longer and walked out of the office on his own.

After leaving the office, he glanced back at the people inside and realized that almost no one had noticed he was gone.

Those who dedicate themselves to scholarship are the ones who truly change the world.

Thinking of this, Gu Huai quickened his pace and walked out of the school.

I have to work hard myself. Even if I can't change the world, I can at least change the fate of a few people.
