Chapter 66 Gold and Silver Mountains
Chapter 66 Gold and Silver Mountains
The resettlement housing is located at the east end of Yinhu Village. It was originally a warehouse, which was temporarily converted into residences.
On the way there, Ali told Gu Huai that Zhang Shengli originally wanted Liu Yanni to stay at his house.
But for some reason, Liu Yanni insisted on moving out.
Gu Huai simply nodded as he listened to these words.
This is someone else's family matter, and I naturally have no right to interfere.
Gu Huai originally only planned to observe from the sidelines, learn about the accommodation situation, and then leave.
It was the middle of the night, and he didn't want to disturb people's rest.
But just as he reached the edge of the resettlement house, Gu Huai noticed that in the pitch-black night, a woman was helping another hunched old man walk with difficulty.
Seeing this, Gu Huai quickly stepped forward.
As he got closer, Gu Huai was able to make out the person's face by the beam of his flashlight. "Sister-in-law."
"Officer... Officer Gu?" Liu Yanni looked at Gu Huai blankly. "What brings you here?"
Gu Huai didn't reply to him, but turned and waved to Hou Hao, signaling him to come up and help.
The two of them worked together to help Zhang's mother back to her residence.
After Liu Yanni helped Zhang's mother back to the bedroom, she came out from the inner room somewhat embarrassed.
"Officers, Brother Li, please have a seat." Liu Yanni moved chairs from the corner and poured a glass of water for each of them. "We don't have anything fancy at home, please don't mind."
After Gu Huai sat down, he took the water glass, took a sip, and said, "Sister-in-law, don't be nervous. I came here to check on you."
"Everything is fine, thank you for your concern, Officer Gu."
"How's the house situation going?" Gu Huai asked.
"The clan pooled together some money to settle the remaining payment for the project," Liu Yanni said, rubbing her hands together. "The roof will be completed soon."
After hearing this, Gu Huai turned to look at Ali and nodded silently.
While clans may sometimes band together to do bad things, in most cases they will help each other and lend a hand when one is in trouble.
"Is that money considered a loan or a gift?" Gu Huai pressed.
"It was borrowed. My great-uncle meant there's no rush to pay it back; we'll talk about it when we have the money." Liu Yanni lowered her head, her voice muffled. "Officer Gu, your arrival is actually quite timely. You're well-read and have a broad perspective. There's something I'd like you to advise me on."
Gu Huai nodded, signaling her to speak.
"I'm thinking, after the New Year, once the house is finished, I'll sell it. But I'm afraid I won't be able to pay back the money..." Her voice grew softer and softer, and the last few words were almost inaudible.
Gu Huai stared at Liu Yanni for a long time, then shook his head slightly.
Sometimes, a person's vision and perspective determine whether they can live a good life.
"Sister-in-law," Gu Huai put down his water glass, "what kind of work have you done before?"
"I farm in my hometown," Liu Yanni said. "After marrying Zhenhua, I stayed at home and never did any farm work."
"Can you read?"
"Knowledgeable enough to graduate from elementary school."
"Want to make money?"
"I want to!" Liu Yanni raised her head, her eyes brightened for a moment, then dimmed again. "But I don't know anything, I don't know what to do."
"If you want to make money, that's fine," Gu Huai said. "My family owns a garment factory in Xixiang. If you have nothing to do, you can go there to work. You can cut loose threads, pack, keep accounts, or any other job. I'll tell my dad, and you can just go."
"Can...can I do it?" Liu Yanni asked hesitantly.
"Who's born knowing how to do this?" Gu Huai stood up. "You go try it first, and we'll see if you can't do it."
Liu Yanni opened her mouth, as if to say something, but then swallowed it back, finally only managing to say two words: "Thank you."
Gu Huai waved his hand, "When the time comes, you can ask Aunt Zhang to help take care of the child. You can give her some money for household expenses when you earn it."
"Yes." Liu Yanni nodded while wiping away her tears.
Seeing this situation, Gu Huai knew he couldn't stay any longer.
So he stood up and walked towards the door. When he reached the door, Gu Huai turned around and looked at Liu Yanni.
"Sister-in-law, don't worry. Just raise the child well, and things will get better."
As he spoke, Gu Huai pointed outside the door, "Don't sell the house. That house is Zhenhua's gold mine left to you."
After saying that, Gu Huai turned and walked out without looking back.
Liu Yanni was left sitting there, looking completely bewildered, muttering to herself.
"Mount Gold? Mount Silver?"
After they left, Hou Hao quickly caught up with them. "Ah Huai, what did you mean by 'mountains of gold and silver' just now?"
Gu Huai glanced at him and smiled, "It doesn't mean anything, I was just trying to comfort her."
"Is it that simple?" Hou Hao asked blankly.
"Yeah," Gu Huai said, "I just feel like I'd be losing out if I sold the house now. Anyway, the village isn't in a hurry for her to pay back the money, so why sell the house?"
As he spoke, Gu Huai turned to look at Ali, "You agree, right, Brother Li?"
"Yes, yes, yes." Ali nodded and said, "Uncle originally intended to give this money, but he didn't want the villagers to gossip, so he said it was a loan. It doesn't matter whether she pays it back or not."
"Benevolence and righteousness." Gu Huai gave a thumbs up.
As they spoke, the group walked back to the police car.
After giving Ali a few instructions, Gu Huai opened the passenger door and got into the car.
As the engine started, Hou Hao stepped on the gas, and the police car drove away.
Watching the police car drive away, Ali wiped the sweat from his forehead and let out a heavy sigh.
"Phew, at least we got rid of this big shot."
Once in the car, Hou Hao gripped the steering wheel and glanced at the passenger seat. "Ah Huai, where do we go next?"
"Let's go back to the station first." Gu Huai leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes, and said, "We'll go to Guangzhou first thing tomorrow morning."
"What are you going to Guangzhou for?"
"Isn't there still one car we haven't found? Go find someone Zhou knows to check on this car." Gu Huai opened his eyes. "We have limited information from the Zhang family, and we can't be sure if the suspect is on this route."
Hou Hao nodded and slammed on the gas pedal.
Gu Huai, meanwhile, slowly closed his eyes and fell asleep in the swaying car.
-----------------
The next morning at 9:30.
Gu Huai squatted alone next to the police car, munching on a steamed bun.
Early this morning, he went to Wang Weiguo's office to report on the findings of his investigation yesterday.
He's been so busy until now that he finally had time to eat breakfast.
Just as he was munching on a steamed bun with glazed eyes from staying up all night, a pair of long, chopstick-like legs appeared in front of them.
He looked up and saw that it was Xia Wanying.
Today he was wearing a khaki wool coat over a plain-colored stand-up collar knit sweater, and skinny jeans.
This outfit made her already great figure even more stunning.
Xia Wanying felt uneasy under Gu Huai's gaze. "Ahem, Officer Gu, why are you staring at me like that?"
After he said that, Gu Huai finally came to his senses.
He quickly swallowed the steamed bun in his hand, clapped his hands, and asked, "Have you retrieved everything?"
"Hmm." Xia Wanying patted the medicine box lightly. "It's all in there."
"Okay, let's get in the car then."
With that, Gu Huai opened the car door and sat down inside.
After Xia Wanying sat down in the passenger seat, Gu Huai started the engine.
"Set off."
